Cisco Voice Questions and Answers

Resolved Question: I need to re-certify with Cisco for work although I rarely use it. Which is easier(voice, security, wireless)?

My job requires me to have a Cisco certification. I need to re-certify soon by passing another exam. However, I have almost never needed to use it (therefore I have forgotten a lot) so I don't want to concentrate an extreme amount of energy on it. Does anyone know which exam might be easiest between the voice, security, and wireless exams?  more

Resolved Question: Are there any reliable and reasonable PRI-T1 providers that will service the NYC area?

We currently have a PRI-T1 where all our domestic long distance and internataional calls are routed via IP. We pay a discounted rate for different countries, and a flat rate within the US. We are looking to replace this provider due to problems with our caller ids not appearing properly or at all, and the voice quality issues where calls are dropped or choppy. Are there any reliable and reasonable providers that will service the NYC area. We currently have the Cisco Avvid IP Phone System.  more

Resolved Question: How do you daisy chain a Cisco IP phone to a PC if they are supposed to be on separate Vlans?

According to my Cisco book, voice and data need to be on separate vlans. And further, different Vlans are always different subnets. But where I work, the IP phone is daisy chained to the PC from the the switch port. So, the phone is plugged into the wall going to a PoE switch port, and the PC is plugged into the phone with a short patch cable. So one switch port and two vlans? Or one switch port and QoS managed flow on one Vlan? OK, so the frame bound to the PC has to go through the phone. I can't find any info on how this is done. Thanks for any help.  more

Voting Question: Cisco download area access question, IOS, IP Phone firmware.?

Hey, I need to download Cisco IOS and Voice software from the Cisco download area. I understand that I need a service contract attached with my CCO Login to be able to access the download area for downloads. I wanted to know if 'any' service contract would grant me the access for the whole download area or download access is limited to type of service contract I have. For example, if I have a service contract associated to my CCO Login that I have purchased for an IP Phone, I would be able to access the phone firmwares and probably the voice softwares like unity too but would I be able to download IOS with that too? I had an office ID that was attached with a service contract and was able to download both IOS and Voice softwares. Anyone with an IP Phone service contract who could tell me or someone who has some knowledge about it would care to elaborate. I would highly appreciate it. Shirely  more

Resolved Question: Where can I go to voice my opinion or give suggestions to the people who created MW2?

They are so messed up. They purposely misled everyone by saying it will have dedicated servers but they weren't talking about servers for games, they were talking about their matchmaking server that shoves you into games with horrible lag because they put you with terrorists(who are hopefully thousands of miles away and hard to connect to). How hard can it be to find a local game when there are over 200,000 people online. All they want is the money, that's why they love bill gates. Even though they are raking in so much money, they still use DemonWare, a no-name business that doesn't even have links on their website, to do the net coding. They could probably afford Cisco 1,000x over. They're friggin retarded.  more

Voting Question: Why can't I get this PDF file to print out larger text?

I have some "quick reference sheets" on voice technology from Cisco in PDF form, and when I print it out, it's in this micro-print that one would literally need a magnifying glass to read, the print is so small. Evidently the format of the document is such that it won't do a "landscape" printout (hoping for larger text), and even though I change the output text from, say, 100% to 125% in the PDF document, the printout size stays the same. The only way this document is readable is to read it off a computer screen. If you want to print it to read it - which is what I want to do, since I sit in front of a computer screen all day - you'll need some high-powered reading glasses or a magnifying glass. If anyone knows any tips on how to overcome this obstacle, please let me know. Thanks.  more

Resolved Question: You think Israel is a thrid world country?

I saw on a previous question, someone implied that Israel was a 3rd world country. Obviously he doesn't know anything about Israel. Israel's contributions and accomplishments: Agriculture * The average palm tree, which has been growing in the Middle East for centuries, is about 18-20 feet tall and yields about 38 pounds of dates a year. Israeli date trees are now yielding 400 pounds/year and are short enough to be harvested from the ground or a short ladder. * Israel is the only country in the world that entered the 21st century with a net gain in its number of trees. This gain was achieved in an area considered mainly desert. Hi-Tech * The cell phone was developed by Israelis working in the Israeli branch of Motorola. * Most of the Windows NT and XP operating systems were developed by Microsoft-Israel. * The Pentium MMX Chip technology was designed in Israel at Intel. Both the Pentium-4 microprocessor and the Centrino processor were entirely designed, developed and produced in Israel. * Voice mail technology was developed in Israel. * Both Microsoft and Cisco built their only R&D facilities outside the US in Israel. * The technology for the AOL Instant Messenger ICQ was developed by four young Israelis. * With more than 3,000 high-tech companies, Israel has the highest concentration of hi-tech companies in the world (apart from Silicon Valley). Medicine * Israeli scientists developed the first fully computerized, no-radiation, diagnostic instrumentation for breast cancer. * An Israeli company developed a computerized system for ensuring proper administration of medications, thus removing human error from medical treatment. 7,000 patients a year die from treatment mistakes in U.S. hospitals. * Israelis developed the first ingestible video camera (so small it fits inside a pill) used to view the small intestine from the inside. * Israeli researchers developed a device that helps the heart pump blood and has the potential to save the lives of those with heart failure. * Clear Light, a new acne treatment developed in Israel, produces a light that kills acne bacteria without damaging surrounding skin or tissue. Military * Israel has the fourth largest air force in the world (after the U.S, Russia and China). Economy * Israel's $100 billion economy is larger than all of its immediate neighbors combined. * Israel is ranked #2 in the world for venture capital funds (behind the U. S.) Outside the U.S. and Canada, Israel has the largest number of NASDAQ listed companies. * Israel has the highest average living standards in the Middle East. * The per capita income in 2000 was over $17,500, exceeding that of the UK. Education and Research * Israel has the highest percentage in the world of home computers per capita. * Israel has the highest ratio of university degrees to the population in the world. * Twenty-four per cent of Israel's workforce holds university degrees, ranking third in the industrialized world, after the United States and Holland and 12 per cent hold advanced degrees. * On a per capita basis, Israel has the largest number of biotech startups. * Israel produces more scientific papers per capita than any other nation by a large margin - 109 per 10,000 people --as well as one of the highest per capita rates of patents filed. Innovation * In proportion to its population, Israel has the largest number of start-up companies in the world. In absolute terms, Israel has the largest number of start-up companies than any other country in the world, except the U.S. * An Israeli company was the first to develop and install a large-scale, solar-powered electricity generating plant. * Israel designed the airline industry's most impenetrable flight security. * Israel has the third highest rate of entrepreneurship -- and the highest rate among women and among people over 55 - in the world. * Israel leads the world in the number of scientists and technicians in the workforce, with 145 per 10,000, as opposed to 85 in the U. S., over 70 in Japan. With over 25% of its work force employed in technical professions. Israel places first in this category as well. Thriving Democracy * Israel is the only liberal democracy in the Middle East. * In 1984 and 1991, Israel airlifted a total of 22,000 Ethiopian Jews (Operation Solomon) at Risk in Ethiopia, to safety in Israel. * When Golda Meir was elected Prime Minister of Israel in 1969, she became the world's second elected female leader in modern times. * Relative to its population, Israel is the largest immigrant-absorbing nation on earth. Immigrants come in search of democracy, religious freedom, and economic opportunity. * Israel has the world's second highest per capita of new books. * Israel has more museums per capita than any other country. Israel achieved all of the above accomplishments despite being continually at war with neighboring countries What are you talking about "live like Americans" Israel is more industrialized than most of Europe and they like to spend their money just like Americans. The economy really took off when they opened up the markets. If there's a country outside the US that really values the American style of living its Israel. I can't back that up with a source, that's just my opinion from living there 16 years. I would agree that Gaza has the standard of living of a 3rd world country, The west bank would qualify as 2nd world probably. Except for the Israeli settlements which seem to thrive. But I did not slip on my words, I meant Israel when I said Israel. I wish I could find a country called Palastine next to Israel on the map but there has been nothing but poor leadership for the poor Palastinian people. They preach hate and use all of their foreign aid on weapons instead of trying to create jobs. You see the Palastinians just have to recognize a right of the State of Israel to exist and they can get a really good deal, but they don't. They (poor leaders that is) want it all, they want to remove all the Israelis. They don't realize that even if it is their land (and I believe it is not) they have to compromise. Why don't the people stand up to their leaders that lead them to suffering? by the way, Warsaw Ghetto? they call checkpoints comperable to WWII ghettos. What a shame. I never heard of gas chambers or labor camps in Gaza or the West Bank. The west bank isn't bad at all, and Gaza is just a big slum. Hardly WWII ghetto. Don't kid yourself. Heso, I have to disagree. The fact that they have such an aggressive military shows that they have learned from the past. They say "Never again" and they mean it. They have to be strong. Otherwise a country like Iran will try to wipe them off the map. Their neighbors are constantly attacking them. I think you read too many illegitimate websites and their false claims about the situation in Gaza. I challenge you to talk to people who have been there if you can't make a trip yourself. There's a lot of sights to see, you would probably enjoy it. For the record, I didn't type it all, i copied and pasted. I know what you meant, and to make that analogy is disgracefully dishonest. They are not committing genocide, if they wanted to that they would have killed them all by now. There are no labor camps, there are no gas chambers, they actually provide millions of dollars worth of aid into Gaza, which isn't even part of Israel anymore. Like I said above, Instead of using all of their aid to provide people with jobs, the Palastinians buy weapons to terrorize and train young children to terrorize. If only the Nazis did that to the Jews. There would be small thriving Jewish communities all over Europe.  more

Resolved Question: Tell me what you think?

Hey guys thanks for checking out my Question.I wrote this story a while ago and showed it to all my family and friends and they've all told me its flawless which i know cant be the truth because this the first story i wrote i'm counting on you guys to give me constructive criticism ignore grammar because i haven't edited yet.P.S tell me if you like the direction its headed. Chapter 1 Department Dilemma and A Girl Named Emma “Security in aisle three, security in aisle three ”the intercom blared. Funny I was the only person in that aisle, three huge shadows came in from the corner of the fantasy perfume display (by the way in love I mean someone should totally give the person who made it an award or something like the noble prize for chemistry because perfume has to do with chemistry and . . . oh yea). The three huge shadows were none other then three huge security guards heading my way. Thank god that they finally came to there senses , poor things were probably sent from staff to get some style advice. They were all wearing uniform but dang did they have hair problems. The one on the left was on the shorter side but was the most muscular. His hair well it was a shocking bleach blond bright enough to blind .Definitely clashed with his dark chocolate skin left him lookin like a cisco impersonator .The one the middle was tall and lanky his hair was just as depressing as his expression. Brown and thready ending in the nip of the neck not quite shoulder length and not yet a mushroom cut either, jumbled together trying there best to stay in a ponytail and to say the least his Chanel half tint sunglasses weren’t helping ; minus the half tint the sunglasses and the Chanel part equals Torturous Circular Optical Vison buy one get one free atrocities( seriously there that bad) His pale skin gave him away from spending way to much time in his moms basement playing frogger helmet chaos or whatever they play these days. The last ....victim was a well built I wanna say Italian but not too sure, good bone features piecing green eyes, now that im looking at him he looks like he could be a male model but ,what the hell was with his decorative facial hair could you say eww .He had a beard if that wasn’t gross enough, it was shaped so it went into a perfect triangular prism (oh yea I aced grade 2 science .....or was it math) here they come. “Miss were gonna have to ask you to come with us”Cisco said in a surprisingly high voice might I add. How cute they were embarrassed . “That won’t be necessary, I already accept”I informed. They looked at me like I was Victoria Beckham sporting last years Prada bag ,dumb founded. “You know on your make over the one you were gonna ask me to do just now”I affirmed . Man were these guys slow. Still looking as dumb as ever ;Optical lense looked like he was gonna speak up but then to my inconvenience stopped leaving us in an awkward silence. “Miss Have you been drinking at all today ”Facial Hair asked “No its only noon” what was this guy on. “Are you sure because you seem a little tipsy” “Well im not” ok now I was getting mad I’m only six-teen did I look like Tara Reid to him. “We just need you to come with us okay ”Optical commented. “I’m not going anywhere with you creeps ,forget about the make over a I have to pick up my cat from the groomers ”I howled. “You don’t have a choice you stole something and know you have to pay the consequences”Cisco replied. “Excuse me ,if you think id steal anything from this piece of junk you are definitely an experiment of artificial stupidity do you now who my father is Sebastian Bloom CEO of one of the biggest corporations in the world I can afford to buy this whole department store not that I d want to” I raised my nose to the ceiling turned on my heel and let those losers bite the dust of course they didn’t have word to say to me and then I walked out the door like the fashionista I am and breathed in the high-maintenance Manhattan I loved . 15 Minutes Later “Hey Sage how was my baby behaving herself”I asked my tie dye studded groomer .I mean honestly if it wasn’t for hippies taking care of animals much more than the average person and the fact that sage was my mom’s best friend from college I would definitely leave on the account of Mercedes being exposed to so much fashion don’t’s. I’ve officially seen to much tie dye in my life.“Oh just darling, she is into getting pampered isn’t she” “Of course”I fake giggled . “So where is my diva”“in the back I think Starr is outfitting her in some radical pet gear, oh put don’t tell her I told you she’d be waay bummed it’s a surprise ”Star  more

So another Area Manager take over store B. then i told him i rejected to be a BIC as I have not get a good training to be a BIC yet.(job scope n responsibility is diff). will be v stress. unless they train me up, i would be fine to be a BIC. BUT again ended up without my agree, i just received a letter stated i will be a BIC. but from then on, my working performmance as a BIC post isn't good. I've no choice so I requested my new AM that i wan a training first. it was agreed my him n he promised that i can be back to my own store after the training YET yet ended up i noticed it was a transfer to that branch... n told the branch in-charge to give me a chance n teach me...!!! i was so angry.! anyway, b4 this, i tender to him n served him one month noticed. last day was 19th Nov. But nv notice he came bk to me on my last day to stop me from resigning n ask me to help him till mth-end as he is having 10 stores stock take. but i rejected. however, as he did not arrange another ppl to store B, i went back on the next day due to need to count money n cisco would be coming to collect.. i feel bad or may say feel worried to that store... now that finally got a BIC take over, i told him ytd would be my last day. I was shocked n Surprise that he replied me "no, u do not do what u want. u have been given sufficient opportunties but u failed to value it, u have failed in your duty!" He put my working performance as UNSATISFACTORY and blacklist me..... Now i feel angry n not happy about it. I wish to fight back.....  more

Resolved Question: What exactly is a CTI Port in Cisco Call Manager 6.0?

I am a datat guy getiing into VOIP. So please don't be Voice brutal. I am trying to understand why and what you could use a CTI port for. Also, can you use the intercom feature for paging? And if so, does it have to barge?  more

Resolved Question: Cisco Unified Communications (CallManager) question...?

I've recently been tasked to find out if our CallManager system could support sending paging messages to a building or certain zones (instead of installing an analog pager system). I found out that Cisco Unified CallManager Express has a paging function but the full CallManager does not. I'm currently running version 6. Does anybody know if this functionality will be included in patches/upgrades? I know there are some third party vendors out there that have some products...it seems kind of silly though that I'd need to go out and buy a whole new box and learn how to integrate it with the CallManager when it seems that just having a unicast voice stream capability would be fairly easy for Cisco to have included. Does anybody, any Cisco employees here? know why it was not included? Does anybody here have any reviews of the following two systems? http://www.berbee.com/public/berbeesoftware/InformaCast.aspx http://www.ipcelerate.com/assets/docs/IPcelerate_ER.pdf  more

Resolved Question: Cisco IP telephone technology?

http://www.starshipcorp.com/shop_dealer/images/Cisco%20IP%20Phone%20CP-7941G.jpeg My school has Cisco IP telephones in all offices. Like the one shown above. Whats the specialty of IP telephones as compared to the usual telephone at home? Does the IP telephone operate on the local intranet/ethernet? And the voice is sent as packets? Hence how can u guarantee about quality as packets might get lost/damaged due to network congestion? Also, if a certain institution has an IP phone system that means their internal calls are free of charge right? (As they already have an ethernet network)  more

Resolved Question: Hi everyone : ) I'm not sure what to study next?!?!?

I have started working in desktop support which I must admit I don't really enjoy. I have passed the Cisco CCNA and in my current role I get to support users with Avaya which is something I find interesting and do enjoy. Thing is I have no real experience other than in my current role as I used to work in Sales. I want to get the CCVP next but worry that I may make myself unhireable as only knowing that field... should I do a server MCTS first or just concentrate on the CCVP and Avaya???? The experience with Avaya I'm getting is pretty minimal, I basically pass on tickets to the network team but I do get involved with bridge calls when there is an outage and the Voice network team have offered to help with equipment, sitting in on training etc as the company I work for uses Cisco and Avaya. But of course I worry if I go for an external job they may not hire me based on that and the CCVP. Basically What I'm saying is I'm worried about putting all my eggs in one basket, it's a lot of studying to get to a point where I can't get a job in the Voice field. Any advice would be greatly received : )  more

Resolved Question: Any CCVPs (or knowlegeable CCNPs) that can help me out?

I'm trying to set up QoS for VOIP on a 3560 switch. The phones and PCs are sharing a port so I can't do QoS by port. But I can't do the "match protocol" command on this switch (any switch?) How do I get my switch to recognize and tag the voice packets? I'm just a lowly CCNA and this was placed in my lap after someone ran an auto qos on the switch and left it to run for months. Now phones are disconnecting because auto qos doesn't work with non-Cisco phones (not without further configuration anyway.) VLANs is one option. I'd rather add markings to the frames. But all the ONT training stuff I have describe markings, but not how to apply them.  more

Resolved Question: What is this song??

Does somebody know what song this is? In the beginning of the song, a female's voice lists off random big cities, in this order: "Global DJs--Paris. London. LA. Chicago. Tokyo, Baghdad, New York... Hear the global DJs... Moscow. Memphis. Cape Town. Dallas. Amsterdam. Boston. Berlin. San Francisco..." -And then the main singer (a male) starts: "If you're going -- to San Fran-cisco, be sure to wear -- some flowers in your hair..." --And then he repeats that again, with some electronic editing mixed in his voice? Does anybody know which song that is?  more

Resolved Question: Voice (PSTN) to VoIP conversation for Cisco.?

Can I plug a FXO module directly from the wall PSTN in a 2600XM with CCME and use a Cisco phone and dial-out and receive calls or is a gateway required like Cisco ATA 186? I'm not looking into PBX, I'm not looking into PBX in a flash, etc - I just want a straight through connection - no voicemail - and ideally use one router for it all. If I can't plug it into one router, can I use a gateway easily to CCME for the 2600? Thanks. Please excuse, I am new to this.  more

Resolved Question: Cisco VG200 w/ 2VIC 2FX with a Voice Gateway 200 and no PBX just Call Manager Express on 2621XM.?

I know this sounds kind of boring and all not having a PBX (down the road) but this is for simple home use. I have a Cisco 2621XM w/ Call Manager Express, a Voice Gateway 200 w a 2 VIC 2FX card, and a 7906G VOIP IP Phone. All I (boringly) want to do is plug in a phone line into the VG200, run it through the 2621 w/ Call Manager Express, and ring ring. Sounds simple, over complicated for a basic phone line but there is a bit more to it down the road. Is this relatively easy to do? Also, how is licensing handled? Always the fun buster... Thanks!  more

Voting Question: I Want to setup VOIP between two points and need help?

Resolved Question: I have a Cisco 2621XM and want to set up external connection, do I need a VPN module for voice connection?

I have a 2621XM multi-function router. It does support voice. How would I go about making a point to point connection to another same modem router at a remote site to use the same trunk or phone line using a voice gateway. The new IOS has Cisco Call Manager Express. Would I need to get a VPN module on both ends to support the link or is the answer a lot less complex and involved. Any help would be useful. Thank you.  more

Resolved Question: Should I be able to use a Cisco VG200 w/ 2vic for a regular phone line to IP phone?

Though i don't have a real life PBX as it's unrealistic for home use, nor multiple phone lines, will the voice gateway allow me to use an IP phone/ create other extension to other phones (in theory).. dial 9 our.. get the drift. I can't afford the Cisco CallManager hardware in my dreams but I know there are IOS Command line that can do similar. I'm hoping the VG200 will allow all this without the need for Asterik or even work in conjunction. Though I'd like to go the CCVP way of business... All I want is to hook up a phone line in the VIC on the Voice Gateway then do the proper configs in between (if possible as my question poses) to get a dial-tone on a Cisco IP phone then be using VOIP. Thanks for your help! =) Oh yea, bonus question, are there a Windows version of CallManager or is that pretty much just hardware?  more

Resolved Question: Cisco Inexpensive VOIP solution for newbs?

I'm getting a Cisco 1701 which I know supports VOIP and considering a 2621XM to learn. I know both can do PBX (am I right?). I'd like to use a VOIP phone (or two) and use a land line. Also, I plan to set up a point to point connection to peer wanting to do similar. If I wanted to set up voice over land line what do I need to do, and cheaper method is best. I've heard of DID and FXS. DID is more expensive, the cards I've found. What interface cards would I need to accomplish inbound and outbound calling for as cheap (within a 100 range) as possible but functional. Also, say I didn't use a land line though defeat a big purpose, can I still set up two Cisco IP phones linked? Do I need Call Manager Express, is there a cheaper solution like computer based software? I'm confused on logistics and how I could go about this. If anyone could provide info, it would be great!  more

Resolved Question: Like the Cisco 2621XM router, can the Cisco 2620XM router do VOIP PBX as well?

I'm new to voice and I'm studying for CCNA then on to CCNP and getting accustomed as well wanting to explore CCNP and VOIP in general. I want to set up a direct link with a friend to his house and have a phone at each end. Also, possibly get two for here to test. I'm sure I can do the research on how to set the individual router up but is it difficult? Also, do you need computer software as an intermediary (or is this just for directory/voicemail?). I can get the 2620XM for about a hundred dollars cheaper than the 2621XM ($200 instead of $300) and if I can get two for each link and one for local use it would be perfect. I'm a student so I'm not exactly in the money. If you have an alternative suggestion as well please feel free. Thanks!  more

Resolved Question: Can the Cisco 2621 regular router support Voice PBX rather than the Cisco 2621XM?

I'm working on my CCNA with learning some more advanced routing techniques. I'm also wanting to look into CCVP when that's done. If I bought a 2621 (I already have a regular 2621 and 2501 and 2504) will I be able to support voice functionality? I'm just needing something with two phones and learn off of. Can someone give suggestions? Thanks!  more

Resolved Question: Is a Wireless Services Module necessary to use Cisco Wireless Domain Services?

Trying to figure out if I can just use an AP as the WDS, and basically have the authentication self-contained. Don't have the cash for any other Cisco equipment. Need to use the Fast Secure Roaming feature for voice over wireless. Anybody have any experience with this? To quantify the situation. I will be using between 6 and 7 APs. Will have at most 200 TOTAL possible wireless clients. Entirely content with large vlan to cover wireless. Just wondering if WLSM was a necessary component, not just a convenience.  more
