Resolved Question: Network Bottlenecks..?

So I have a network with multiple subnets.. behind a firewall. When I transfer data between servers on the "40 net" I get great speeds of 10Mb/s on a 100 full duplex network.. however, when I transfer between the "100 net" and the "40 net" I get a max. of 1.1Mb/s. I checked all the settings on the switches and the NIC, everything is set to 100 Full duplex. There are 2 switches in the mix and 1 Cisco PIX firewall.. can anyone point me on the right direction on where to look? what programs to use to test ?? There a Cisco catalyst, a dell powerconnect, and a pix firewall in the mix. The "100 net" connects to the pix, then to the cat (which is a vlan).. the "40 net" connects to the dell powerconnect, which then connects to the pix. I have checked that the settings on the switch, router, and pix are set to 100 full. I have also made sure the two servers in the testing have been set to 100 full. I kind of want to think it might be something with the pix.. but I am not really a network guru, and the network precedes me, so I am still catching up on it.  more

Resolved Question: Cisco VPN Client Doesnt Work With Cisco PIX 501 Firewall?

I Have A Cisco PIX 501 Firewall In My Business Setup. IMy Setup Used To Go Like: Cable Modem- Pix 501- Then The Rest Of The System. I Added A Belkin Wireless Router Recently, So No It Goes Like This: Cable Modem- Wireless Router- Pix 501- Then The Rest. I Connect To The Pix 501 With Cisco VPN Client V. 4.xxxxxx Now It Refuses To Connect, I Keep Getting "Error 412 The Remote Peer Is Not Responding". However When I Disconnect The Wireless Router From The Setup, It Still Does It. I Think I Need A Software Update. Is There Any Other Reason It Could Be Doing This? My Firewall Has All The Required Ports Open, Even When I Turn The Firewall Off I Still Get The Error Message. I Use Verizon Broadband Access On My Laptop To Connect To It Anywhere And It Doesn't Work. It Doesn't Even Connect To It When I'm On A Land line On My Own System.  more

Resolved Question: Cisco PIX port forwarding any to 1 internal IP?

I need to allow ports 10000-20000 to access my VoIP inside my PIX. I presume the easiest way to do this is to allow any port to access the IP for the VoIP device. What is the best way to do this? I am sure there is an easy way to do it and that's what I want to know the programming for. My knowledge of Cisco is limited, although I can usually figure out how to do things with a bit of time. This one is not coming to me!  more

Resolved Question: Cisco Training & Certification?

For a few years now I've been wanting to learn Cisco and get at least one certification. I'm a Network/System Administrator and have years of experience, all MS. I've been unemployed for some months now and would like some advice in what area of Cisco I should enter. I was thinking maybe ASA/PIX firewalls would be a good start. Is that what most of the newbies start with? I really dont want to spend 3,000 dollars, even more, for 3 days training at one of those training facilities where it's rushed and not really worth it, (been to a few of those types of classes). What would any of you suggest? Thanks!  more

Voting Question: Cisco PIX515e bin file corrupt - how do I upload and overwrite? Problems with normal break sequence for PIX.?

I have a Cisco PIX 515e firewall and I had an issue with a bin file tftping over and wasn't completed. I keep trying to do the break option but, unlike a router, I don't have an option to dir flash:, delete flash:, etc. Everytime I use the PIX method defining interface, file, server, etc I try to tftp the file name I get the error "TFTP failed (return:-10 arg:0x1)" using Solar Winds TFTP server on Windows XP. On a normal router, you could xmodem the bin image but what's the alternative for a Cisco PIX515e or other options? Any help would be *greatly* appreciated! Thanks!  more

Voting Question: Netgear Prosafe Firewall VPN Issue?

i have a pair of Netgear VS318v3 firewall vpn routers. i have used the very simple wizzard in the router. the vpn mostly works. site a: 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.99 (server) Site b: 192.168.10.1 255.255.255.0 192.168.10.99 (server) what works: everything can ping everything. router a to router b. router a to server b router a to printer b (.50) and the other way too. i can Remote Desktop to any computer on the opposite network. server a can remote desktop to server b this is all wonderful. What does not work: i can not file share. i know NetBios does not like to run over the network and route. fine. i have done this before with Cisco Pix firewalls by filesharing the IP address. \\192.168.1.100\MyFiles\ file sharing will not work at all from any location to any computer even though i can ping that computer and i can Remote Desktop to that same computer. and yes the local lan can access the file sharing of the computers in question. any ideas' what went wrong? seems like it should just work. intrestingly i can NOT Telnet across the VPN where i can accross the LAN. Let me Clearify that question. i'm not talking about Netbios at all. i realize that will not work (for the most part). I am talking about some TCP functions. oddly UDP 3389 is working (remote desktop) but Telnet will not . telnet is based on the ip address not the netbios name. why would ICMP and UDP pass and not TCP? To add to the complex situation. i can pull a webpage off of the serverb from server a via the vpn. but i can not telnet or \\192.168.1.99 (server local address)  more

Resolved Question: I need help with my cisco pix 501?

I have a Cisco pix 501 witch has already been setup, but is no longer relevent to the network. It was origonaly connected directly to the modem but is now running though a Netgear router, like this internet can be obtained on all of the computers connected to both the pix and the router, however i cannot network between devices connected to the netgear router and the pix, devices can only be networked or fileshared if they are both directly connected to the same box (router or pix). Unfortunately I cannot get hold of the person who initially setup the pix and have no idea how to program it myself. I cannot get onto the javascript setup from a web browser using the ip supplied by Cisco or from the Netgear router. And it no longer works when directly connected to the modem the computers attached claim there is limited or no connectivity. Any suggestions?  more

Resolved Question: Suggestions on Remote access and Security.?

Specifically, I have several computers on a wireless network, another computer running CentOS 5, and everything is behind a Cisco PIX 501. I want to add two drives on one of my PCs which are shared across my network as virtual shares on the Linux box via exportfs and samba so that I may SSH into that Linux box to add, remove, change files from the Linux box through the samba connection from away from home. I have no clue where to start. What do you smart people out there suggest. I will most likely have to setup my PIX to allow public to private translation through NAT and also enable connections for using FTP, SSH, and whatever port Putty uses as well.  more

Resolved Question: How to set up a Cisco Pix 501 on a home DSL network?

I have a small web development business which is run from my home; and I needed a good way of allowing access to my network via VPN when I was out on the road, or for letting certain other people access some of the files they need. So I bought a Pix 501. Its currently sat idle because I can't get it to work properly. The default configuration is supposed to be sufficient to get started, but it doesn't work for me. We can run the VPN wizard and get that up and running fine, but the default rules mean I can't use my facilites properly from INSIDE the network. By default - I can receive email in outlook, but I can't send it. Running a broadband test on speedtest.net shows a download speed, but no upload. On iGoogle, some of the gadgets (presumably those requiring to send info out) aren't working. Naturally, I can't work without email or upload - I'm sure its just setting up rules but i'm at a complete loss. I need your help! I'm using a BT Voyager 2100 router which assigns an IP to the Pix, and i've put that IP address into the router DMZ so all traffic should be passed onto the Pix. Behind the firewall i've got a NAS, 2 PCs and a network printer, they all communicate with each other just fine. Please help - or at least point me to a good website that can, i'm a software developer, not a network admin!!!  more

Resolved Question: How to configure Cisco ASA 5500 Security appliance to work with Apple iPhone 3g?

Neither Cisco nor Apple have step-by-step configuration guides for Apple iPhone. The only thing Cisco says is that iPhone is compatible with Cisco ASA 5500 series and PIX firewalls. I have ASA 5500. It does not work out of the box. iPhone client connects via VPN properly, gets private IP address, but then does not go further than successful completion of phase 1.No internal resources are accessible. Exchange is not accessible (while I can use it via the same phone if I'm connected directly to the private network via wifi). Thanks! Oleg  more

Resolved Question: DMZ and firewall settings?

We are trying to setup a DMZ server. Our vendor usually plugs the server straight into the Cisco PIX, but ours is hosted by an company offsite. I can get access to it remotely, but we do not have the option of connecting directly to it. Is there a way to configure it in order to add a DMZ interface without a direct connection? Right, I know it'd be simpler to do a direct connection, but is it possible to workaround this? The Cisco PIX firewall is hosted, the server we want to put in the DMZ is in our office with all our other servers and routers.  more
