I've never run across this and looking for best solution. basically I have a cabinet at an offsite location that will provide internet services and point to point services to a remote office that will only have a switch basically plugged into patch panels for cat five drops per office rj45 drop. nothing fancy. back to the cabinet. I have 3 drops cables to deal with. 2 redundant internet cables that provide internet to the cabinet and 1 cable for the point to point connection. I can plug in the cable and test point to point just fine with remote site..no problem. here is my ? I have a cisco asa 5510 firewall that I will be bringing to the cabinet. I'm thinking plug one of the internet drops into the outside port....then run the inside cable to a switch. pretty simple right....but what about the point to point cable? would that go into the switch also? and if so would it allow office users to "see the lan" basically? or do I have to get a managed switch envolved here? thanks...I'll stick around to address any questions and/or explain greater detail brain T: Great.... Ok I got it. Yep the P2P is just that.... a layer 2 I had the carriers set up for me. Resolved Question: Network Bottlenecks..?

So I have a network with multiple subnets.. behind a firewall. When I transfer data between servers on the "40 net" I get great speeds of 10Mb/s on a 100 full duplex network.. however, when I transfer between the "100 net" and the "40 net" I get a max. of 1.1Mb/s. I checked all the settings on the switches and the NIC, everything is set to 100 Full duplex. There are 2 switches in the mix and 1 Cisco PIX firewall.. can anyone point me on the right direction on where to look? what programs to use to test ?? There a Cisco catalyst, a dell powerconnect, and a pix firewall in the mix. The "100 net" connects to the pix, then to the cat (which is a vlan).. the "40 net" connects to the dell powerconnect, which then connects to the pix. I have checked that the settings on the switch, router, and pix are set to 100 full. I have also made sure the two servers in the testing have been set to 100 full. I kind of want to think it might be something with the pix.. but I am not really a network guru, and the network precedes me, so I am still catching up on it. more

hi, I have AT&T dsl. using motorolla 2210-02-1022 dsl modem. which is plugged into a Cisco Catalyst 2900xl switch. I can access internet and upload and download just fine. I can see other computers on network just fine. I cannot open or forward any ports at all. I want to open some ports for online games and doing online scans show I have some kind of firewall running. I have windows firewall completly turned off. no other software firewalls. according to the online scans all ports are closed or stealthed. does the cisco catalyst 2900xl have a firewall? if so how do I access it? the dsl modem does not show a firewall in its gui. Voting Question: Encryption Domain Alternative?

We are currently switching hosting providers and setting up tunnels between our client sites and our new hosting provider. Our new hosting provider recommended using encryption domains to limit the access of the tunnel, and we decided to give it a try; however, we are running into some issues. Our client-level application needs access to three different servers at our hosting facility: 1. The load balancer, which routes the traffic to our application data server (the IP begins with 174.xx.xx.xx); 2. The database server (the IP of the db server begins with 98.xx.xx.xx). and 3. The web-server (the IP begins wtih 98.xx.xx.xx). Thus, we were told by our new hosting provider that our customer must add three different IPs to the encryption domain: the VIP fro the load balancer which begins with 174.xx.xx.xx, the IP of our db server which beings with 98.xx.xx.xx and 3. the IP of our web server which also begins wtih 98.xx.xx.xx Our hosting provider is using Cisco ASA 5510 and our client is using Netgear ProSafe VPN Firewall Model FVS318. When we asked our client to add the three IPs to their router as the encryption domain, we were told that the Netgear ProSafe VPN Firewall Model FVS318 does NOT allow multiple IPs for the same tunnel in the encryption domain. We were told that: 1. We can enter a single IP for the encryption domain (cannot do this because we ahve three IPs). 2. Enter a single IP Range (cannot do this because we have two IP sets -- one beginning with 174 and one beginning with 98). 3. No encryption domain -- which is obviously not recommended. When we mentioned this problem to our hosting provider, we were told that our hosting provider can create a single NAT for all three IPs, but if they do this and the tunnel ever goes down, our hosting provider would have to initiate the tunnel. We do not want this. We want our customers and our application to be able to initiate the tunnel. Therefore, we are at a stand-still when it comes to a solution. Therefore, my question is what do you recommend using where we can give access to our client using the tunnel to only the three servers; is encryption domain the only way? if we don't use the encryption domain, is there soemthing else that we can use to protect our network? Is there a different piece fo the encryption domain puzzle that I am missing. I know that one solution is to get all devices on the same IP range and just use that IP range, but that would require close to 50 man hours of work because we have a few hundred VIPs setup that we will need to change. more

Hi, I’ve been asked for work to setup a windows based firewall to sit in-between the internet and a small dedicated network we are setting up for visitors. Basically the setup should go : “Intenet” > “ADSL Modem router (netgear)” > “windows 2003svr box running firewall (with 2 network cards)” > “cisco switch” > “visitor PC/Laptops .etc” I can’t just use the routers built in firewall as it does not meet the companies audit/logging requirements. So far I have tried plugging the windows box into the switch and the router then bridging the Ethernet connections; this will allow traffic to pass through the server but not much else (making it a big glorified switch). I thought that by doing this I could use on the windows firewall to manage and log traffic on the bridge but it doesn’t... Additionally TCP/IP filtering (from advanced TCP/IP options) doesn’t seem to work on a windows bridge. Another Idea I’ve had (but haven’t tried) is to setup a new network on the server by running DNS/DHCP and setup windows routeing to have the netgear routers network and this new network talk. But it just seems like to much effort, I mean when using a packet analyzing tool like wireshark, I can see all the packets passing over the bridge I setup….. I just need to filter/log them? Any ideas?.... maybe an online guide(crosses fingers)? p.s. Please don’t suggest a Linux solution like smoothwall, I have already done this but I have to use a windows box apparently. more

We’re experiencing intermittent connectivity issues. We put in a Linksys firewall in our network and everyone seemed all okay except one subnet cannot get to the Internet. It can hit the Linksys BEFSR41 inside and outside IP address. However, from that remote site Cisco 2621 it’s only getting 1/10 ping replies to our “Internet” Cisco router (to the inside-interface) or no response to any Internet addresses. We’ve already changed the cables. I’m confused because they are sitting on the same switch and the same subnet. (Remote Lan)-> LAN->Firewall x.x.x.61 ->Internet Router x.x.x.57->Internet From the corporate LAN, I can ping everywhere and the clients can resolve FQDN, etc. From the remote lan, I can always ping x.x.x.61, but not the .57. I am creating Vlan's and I need to set up intervlan routing. My equip. consists of Cisco 3500XL (L2) switches, Two Cisco 2600 routers and Netscreen firewall. One of the routers (our Internet gateway) is owned by AT&T and they will not allow me to do any configs on it. I have a 2nd sitting on my desk waiting for me. An added problem is we have a DMZ and multiple remote offices that need access. Right now, local network and DMZ connect to seperate switchs, the switches connect to the firewall, the firewall connects to AT&T router which runs to the demarc. My thought was to configure the subinterfaces for my vlans on my 2nd router and place the router between the firewall and the AT&T router. My new topology would be switches > Firewall > Router for vlans > Gateway router > Demarc. What issues am I creating by doing this... or is this the correct way to do it? The reason I don't create the interfaces on the firewall is I don't know very much about the firewall... I do know Cisco. But it sounds like my best bet is to learn the Netscreen.... but mAn!
