I'm a senior in high school right now and I'm a tad concerned about my college major. I'm a strong writer. I excel in history, journalism, biology, and my literature & composition classes -- but I take a greater interest in my weaker subjects. I want to major in biochemical engineering, or perhaps aeronautical engineering. AP Chemistry, AP Physics, and AP Calculus have been the hardest classes that I have ever taken. I had a B or a C average in both chemistry and physics. It looks now like it will be the same case for Calculus. I know that at the university the classes will only get to be more difficult, but I still want to pursue these more technical sciences for my major. The concepts that we learn in the classes aren't hard for me to understand. It seems to be the actual mathematics and problem solving involved in these courses that I'm having troubles with. It's almost as if my brain simply isn't hard-wired correctly for these subjects. I love taking the classes. I've never before had a real thirst to learn something this badly. I'm intrigued when I'm in class, and I always feel motivated to learn more -- even after looking in shock at yet another mediocre test grade. Biotechnology interests me and I want to be a part of it. But I don't know if it's a realistic goal. Can I "re-wire" myself for these subjects? Or am I just a little bonkers for considering this plan for college? (Perhaps I'm overstudying?) more

I know that there is going to be a lot of hard work involved but I have wanted to be a doctor who works with children, and as of lately have found the brain very interesting. I believe it is saddening when children and adolescents are either born or come down with a illness of the brain, your brain holds the key to your dreams, future, and in some way your soul, and many times once a person comes down with a serious illness of the brain, there whole life is put on hold. I want so badly to help young people and babies suffering from these conditions and give them hope, but I am not really great at chemistry, physics, or calculus. I've taken Physics honors, Chem. honors, AP biology, and I am now a senior and am currently taking Pre-calc, and I am also enrolled into a Biotechnology and am currently in my third year in the Biotechnology program. So I have pushed myself to the max, and I try to say to myself the longer you take the classes your bound to get good at them and accomplish your dreams. But I average a C in the Physics, Chem, and math courses. Biotechnology I'm okay in as I long as I do my work, it gets really discouraging, its just me and my mother so there is no extra cash for tutoring, and my teachers get really put off when I ask a lot of questions. I want to be a doctor but I don't know if I should pursue that road if I major in a science major to get into med school just to have Chemistry, inorganic and organic, Physics, Calculus, Biology and just to not do good in any of them.I don't want to flunk out of college. I know you don't have to have a science major to get into med school, as long as you take the courses required to get in, but that would be extra money because your taking extra classes outside of your major. So I was thinking about being a Neuropsychologist because that deals with the brain and I could I am assuming major in psychology, which I'm in AP Psych now and am doing fairly good in, but I heard they have to get a PhD, I know you don't have to go to med school or law school to get a PhD, many people get them in any field, but would I have to go to med school to be a Neuropsychologist? I'm an asian, female, first-generation college student. I've participated in the Project Uplift program at Chapel Hill. I go to a magnet program at a fairly smaller and low-income school compared to the rest of Charlotte, NC...but many of the graduating classes before me have gotten into some great universities like Stanford, and Duke. I'm feeling insecure since I kind of really lost sight of things 2nd semster junior year. I slacked off...bad. Really bad. It wasn't pretty..but it was in the AP's and my good grades from throughout the year saved me from falling beneath a C...that, and my calculus grades result from how I've always been a mathematical Philistine. As of senior year, my rank is currently 4 out of about 189. My weighted GPA is 4.24. I don't want to seem like an idiot asking people from over the internet what subject to take for my year 11 and 12 that could possibly affect my whole life... but i have to pick 12 units so, people with experience, could you please share your opinion on my subjects? I so far have: 2 Unit Maths 2 Unit English Adv 2 Unit Physics 2 Unit Chemistry I want to do Biotechnology if i can make it to Uni but i don't want to take Biology. I am keen on Physics now and my teachers and siblings have told me that Chemistry is important. Apparently Biology is just a whole lot of text and memorizing so it's easier to learn than lets say Physics or Chemistry. Okay, honestly, i wouldn't mind Biology but it's too stressful. I have 8 Units. I need 2 more subjects, both of 2 Unit value. 2U Ancient History 2U Economics 2U Business. I think Ancient History would be interesting and i was pretty estactic at first to take it but Eng Adv already has so much to memorize, and so do my other subjects. I'm not big on economics. I've always been interested in the biological field, and I would love to go into Virology. I've kept it loose- not really setting my goals on any one thing yet, but that's my goal, if it will work. I've kept it out of my mind- but now I'm four days away from the summer before my Jr. year in high school, and I think I need to start to think. Yes, I will talk to my counselor, but she's only one person. So, if you can answer ANY of these, please do! Thanks in advance! 1) What is a good salary? I would plan on living in a smaller city or rural area, but obviously I would go where my job takes me. I would plan on living in the US, most likely Midwest. I wouldn't nessacarily need a huge, fancy house, nor a nice car- I currently ride horses, Eventing. I would love to continue this. I would need to allow, to be safe, I'm guessing about 8,000/yr for this.It would be cheaper if I had a house in the country and could keep the horse at home. But I also realize it is very unlikely I will be riding again until I am settled in my job, so who knows? From what I have found, Virologists earn $30-$100,000+, with $53,000 being the norm. Would this be enough to live confortably where I would like to and have leftover for horses? 2) I would plan on getting my undergrad in Biology or Microbiology. I'm just wondering (Yes, I don't know all of the ins and outs of it, I'm sorry if I mess up terminology) if I should consider, when it comes to majors, either doing a double major or minoring in a buisness thing? My class rank is about the 28th percentile- however, I really hope Colleges will not count Class rank too highly. My high school is an "Arts Magnet" school- we have a bunch of arts classes and bring in a bunch of kids from the cities who want to take them. We have classes like sewing, Painting I-III, (Same with drawing, dance, and ceramics) and all of the Arts Magnet kids' classes are "Arts Infused"- and very easy. I am not part of any school sport or organization, but I am VERY active in the USPC and our local foxhunting group. I have a job. Resolved Question: The more I learn about the world the less I want to get married and the more I feel like I should break up?

At the bottom I explain why I don't want to tell her any of this. I'm a senior molecular biology major. My girlfriend is a beautiful chemical engineering major who is very wise and down to earth. BUT....over the past year I've been getting addicted to learning about the world - the history of everywhere, the middle east, current issues facing the world. Along with that comes a very strong interest to travel, maybe live and work in various countries for a few years at a time. These things are on a much higher priority than getting married and having kids, or even making discoveries about stem cells and biotechnology which is why I chose this major. But she wants kids no later than 26. (She would have them the day she graduates if it was her way). I don't even know if I want them. Maybe I just want to travel and work and meet people and have that be my life. At least until I'm 30 something. Basically, the more I learn about the world the more I realize I don't know, which then makes me want to experience it more rather than have kids and settle down. Part of "experiencing it" to me involves making lots of friends, which is so much more fun and easier when unmarried...and single. I'm afraid to tell her because it does not lead to anything. It will make her sick to her stomach and cry like crazy but I don't think she would break up with me, I think she would just hope that I change and continue the relationship in sadness and fear. I'm shopping around for universities and I saw that Princeton has a really really really great program for biotechnology, which is what I want to study most. We use engineered microbes all the time now in industry, from stone-washed jeans to oil spill clean ups. Scientists at MIT have even recently engineered a viral bacteriophage to construct lithium ion batteries. Humans have always used and engineered animals to do our bidding; i.e. all livestock and pets. But microbes seem different; they're invisible to the naked eye and it only takes one mutated individual to divide into a thousand or million potentially dangerous threat. If history has taught us anything, it's that our pathetic attempts at combating microbes only breeds stronger ones (heard that penicillin is losing its effectiveness?). What do you guys think? more

Okay, I'm a sophomore and I'm taking AP Euro history and Honors Chemistry. Last semester I received a 4.0 because I got a B in Chemistry and a B in Algebra II. I live in CA and go to one of the top high schools in the state, so the curriculum is difficult! Junior will start and I'm taking: Honors anatomy Biotechnology (ROP) Journalism Trigonometry/Pre-calculus English Spanish 3 U.S. History I tried to get into AP US but I didn't get in, and I'm going to try and waver into the class. But if I don't get in, will I have a bad chance at getting into UCLA? I mean I also have: Varsity Basketball (we got 2nd in the state championships) Won art competitions volunteer at Kaiser Volunteer science tutor Part of Habitat for Humanity (builds homes for the poor) To me it seems like I'm not doing enough. I am going to aim for a 2200 on my SAT (I'm studying for it) and I plan to write a great admissions essay. Other than that is there anything else I should do? I'm currently a freshmen in high school looking for a career in medicine. English, Science and History classes have 3 different levels of regular, honors, and GT/AP, with regular being the easiest and GT/AP being the most difficult. GT in my school is the same as AP, except without a big exam at the end of the course. Math courses come in mostly regular or GT/AP. Resolved Question: What rights do I realistically have for any type of custody for newborn?

Ok, here is the situation: My ex-fiance and I are both 22. We were both living in AZ where the child was conceived. She has enormous amounts of debt and had to move to Oregon to live with her mom. This way she didn't have to pay rent and she could pay off her bills. She is currently on the state's medical insurance plan. At the time of all this, I was only able to give her about $250.00 a month, most of which went to her late fees and interest on her way overdue credit cards...a situation we handled ineptly..which led to our demise. I now have a stable job making about 38k (gross), no debt, and am in school full time and will have my bachelors in molecular biotechnology in about 3 months, and am applying to medical school in May (giving me at least 1 year 4 months before I matriculate if accepted). My mother, sister, and 5 of my close friends all said they will commit to helping out (with things such as daycare, driving my kid to places when appropriate, or any random situation that may occur), and I am not dumping any responsibility, but that was mentioned to make known the kind of support circle that I have. Also, I will do all I can to facilitate our son's relationship with his mother (such as flying her out here frequently if I were to get physical custody). The mother, and I say this respectfully, has had a very very inconsistent employment history for the past 3 years and has been unemployed for the past 7 months, dropped out of college, and could only survive the next 2 years if she relied heavily on her mother (70%). She has written to me that I have no rights or access to our son, and she cut off all contact with me. She swore up and down that I will never get to see him. I have been sending notarized letters with checks to her last known address now to continue to show my interest in being his father, and am in the process of registering with the putative father registgry in Oregon before he is born since I have random 3rd parties calling my mother to tell me that they are putting him up for adoption. The strike against myself, however, is that I consider myself to have verbally abused my ex when she broke this off initially. I've never made a threat to her in the 5 years we were together, nor have I called her any obscenities. I did however voice my anger through a series of 10 texts that contained harsh language, NO THREATS. This is the only case/proof of me even being somewhat abrasive with her. The excuse I have (vs. the reason) is that after she broke it off, she literally would change her mind about whether I could see my son for 6 straight days, this took a huge emotional toll on me. Once again, I acknowledge that my blowup wasn't warranted, but it was at least instigated. Two wrongs don't make a right, but I will mention that she has been equally abrasive over a consistent time period. My question is: Given these demographics and the fact that we are to be separate when the baby is born (and given my ONE blowup), what are my chances of any type of custody. I guess the better question would be, what do I realistically stand a chance for in regards to being a part of my son's life, given that I am in AZ. Also, I doubt they would give him up for adoption. (I am also aware that I may have to pay back the state for their help, and will have to pay child support. I am not doing all of this to gain control of my ex, I sincerely want a relationship with my son and don't want to be a deadbeat dad-I did the act of creating him and am following up with my responsibilities. (My ex and I have never had any other partners, and subsequently don't have any other children, we both have spotless legal records-if at all pertinent) more

Ok so I have a 3.4 10-12 gpa in high school. Junior year I was in 6 IB classes. This year (senior year) I am in 4 classes. I didn't really get good grades sophomore year, but junior year my gpa increased, I got a 3.86 for 1st semester and 4.0 second semester. I worked an average of 9 hours per week during my junior and senior years. Im involved in scientifically speaking and key club. Junior year I was the supply coordinator for the scientifically speaking club. This year I am a AVID tutor. I played basketball freshman year and volleyball freshman and sophomore year. Resolved Question: UC questions need help plzzzzzzz!!!!!?

First question I've just finished my Junior year and completed nearly all my A-G courses except my last (of four) years of English. Was i suppose to take it prior to my senior year seeing as how I need to complete the A-G in order to apply to a UC or can I still apply and just take my last year of English in my Senior year? Second question I am taking my SATs subject and reasoning and ACT during the fall (senior year). Seeing as how I need my test scores on the application before I submit it, does this mean it is now too late for me to get into a UC after graduating high school? Am I screwed or is it possible to take my tests in the fall and still record the scores on my application and submit it all before the deadline? Third Question My GPA is a low 3.0-3.24 average, I have no extracurricular activity, and although I am quite confident of my upcoming test, lets say hypothetically I get an average test score, would getting a GPA of 3.5^ in my senior year and writing an outstanding personal statement make a difference? Fourth Question I am registering for my tests on Collegeboard.com and on the section where it says send score, am I suppose to send the scores to the UCs of my choice even though I haven't send my application the UC I want to get into (or unsure if I'll even get into)? Fifth Question Which UCs provide majors in biotechnology? Please rank all the UCs with a BE major by how good their programs are. Sixth Question Do I have to take two specific SAT Subject tests for the UC I'm applying for or can it be any combination? For example, I'm applying for UC Riverside, UCSD, and UCLA and wish to major in Biotechnology. Does that mean I have to specifically take the Bio and Math tests because my bio teacher was horrible and taught us little to nothing on biology other than "Global Warming and the Human race is evil! Save the environment blah blah blah!" And I'm fairly good at math but World History and Lit seem to be my current strong points. So do i have to specifically take the Math and Bio tests or can I just choose whatever test I feel comfortable taking (World History and Literature)? Resolved Question: Is there help for a displaced homemaker WITH a college degree and computer skills?

I have "only" been out of the paid work force for the last 5 or 6 years if you count "substitute teacher" as a full-time job back in 2003 which it never is. I'm in a situation now where if I don't get a paid job soon I will wind up on the streets or forever dependent on the Battered Womens' Shelters. I have my Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, type 80 wpm, have updated "office" computer skills coming out my ears, but find when every place I send the resume looks at how long ago my year and a half at a call center and a year as a Benefit Authorizer were, I get passed over and told nothing. Even temporary agencies like Manpower and Kelly - which I first signed on with in 1998 and 1994, respectively - can't find me temporary office or light industrial work of more than one day here and there. Jobs requiring a degree these days are also underhandedly off-the-record requiring recent verifiable work experience and saying that you have to have paid work history within the last five years. That is clearly discriminatory against recent-housewives but at this point my only hope of ever supporting myself would be to file a lawsuit against one of those companies and live off the winnings! I tried to re-enroll at the same university where I got my bachelor's, in a Biotechnology program, but have no way whatsoever to pay tuition again. I can't get loans because the original ones have gone into default while I was an unemployable housewife. (He wasn't making enough money to support both of us let alone pay either of our college debt) Also I have had one year of Law school and I do know enough to know that employers discriminating because of a Bankruptcy and other personal credit problems is illegal under California labor law. So what am I supposed to do to deal with all of this while I wind up on the streets or in a shelter trying to study for Biotech without being able to pay the tuition let alone buy books? All I am is a displaced homemaker and I find myself shlepped in with people who either have no education, no skills, drug or alcohol addictions, or criminal records, none of which I deserve to be lumped in with! more

In 9th I took honors in science, English, and history, as well as normal 10th grade geometry. I also took classes in music history and algebra. For 10th, my anticipated schedule includes honors for all core subjects and Spanish I, aswell as Journalism 1. For 11th, I will take all honors for Spanish II, Pre-Cal, US History II, Chemistry, and AP for English. My elective will be Economics/Sociology. Finally, for senior year, I will be enrolled in AP classes for Calculus, Biology, History, English, honors for Spanish III, and I believe that my schedule will only be able to hold that much. I want to major in biotechnology + English, with a minor in education so that I can teach. Do I really need AP history in senior year, and will colleges like my courseload and grades?
