Open Question: Should I take modules in Pharmacology or Biochemistry?

I need to choose my modules for next year (I'm doing a Biomedical Bsc) and need to choose my modules for next year. I'm interested in everything which makes the choices difficult. Should I focus myself on pharmacology or biochemistry? I'm asking in terms of career opportunities. What offers the best career wise? Will I be forced to continue into a Master's and Phd in one more than the other? Also where is the money at? Thanks!  more

Open Question: Help with ideas for an answer on a fellowship application, please?

I'm a senior in high school applying for a summer fellowship program for a biomedical research institute. The program provides students with the opportunity to work with medical scientists and gain experience in research. I plan to go to medical school to study neuroscience and hopefully become a surgeon. The application has a short answer question: Briefly discuss your career goals and why you would like to be chosen for the Fellowship Program. (It gives about 1/2 of a page of space.) It's a really straightforward question and the answer should be pretty obvious (gain experience, etc), but very few applicants are actually selected for this program and I'd like to have an answer that stands out a little better than, "This program would give me hands-on experience and prepare me for my studies in medical school..." Basically I need help finding a unique answer that's still genuine.  more

Open Question: Should I move to America?

I was born in New York and was living in Ireland since I was 4. I hate it. I always dreamt of returning to the USA. It should be no problem seeing as I'm a citizen and all. I'm 19 and in college in Ireland, studying Biomedical Science and I was planning on doing postgrad medicine, I don't hate it....but that's not what my passion is. I have always been good at art and my dream job would be working as an actor/animator in LA, but I realize how insanely competitive it is. So if I go, I am not guaranteed a job or accommodation or anything, but it's what I want to do. If I stay, I am guaranteed a good, secure job (if I get into med) but will have to tolerate hating this place. And there's also having to break the news to my parents to worry about, which I doubt they'll take too kindly. What should I do? I know it's easy to use the "follow your dream" cliché, but there's so many different factors to my problem.  more

Open Question: Does it matter to colleges if I take 4 or 5 classes my senior year?

Our school runs off of a 6 period day. Because next year will be my senior year and I am ahead with my credits, I can take 4 or 5 classes rather than 6. These are the classes that I want to take next year: AP English Lit AP Spanish Language Either Physics or Anatomy Honors AP Calculus I'm taking Government/Economics over the summer to lighten my load a little. I'm worried though, that if I take 4 classes in my senior year, colleges might look at that as me trying to slack off and not take as many classes. The classes are pretty rigorous, and if I add another class, it would just have to be an elective like Fashion, Art, or teacher aiding, which has nothing to do with the biomedical engineering major that I want to achieve. If I take only 4 classes in my senior year, will it detriment my chances of getting into a college that I want? My BIG dream is to get into USC (University of Southern California). Will it hurt my chances for that school, or other schools?  more

Open Question: Biomedical engineering?

Resolved Question: Why do people study engineering? Long hours, heavy physical labor, relatively low pay, no work socialization?

I mean, can't a Mexican laborer or unionized construction worker pretty much do anything a Mechanical or Civil engineer can? Open Question: Are there science majors you don't need organic chemistry?

At one time, I was contemplating on having a Bachelor's Degree in Biology but changed majors to Medical Technology. I am currently talking Organic Chemistry right now, and I must confess, it's really a pain in the you know. I want to change my major right now, it's starting to leave me frustrated. I'm not aware of any major within the biomedical field that would not require me to take organic chemistry. But the truth is, even if I continued to take it, I fear I might fail it. That already was evident in the first test. I'm still pursuing my Associates and would like to do something before time runs out. I appreciate the responses.  more

Open Question: How can I pay for Stanford?

Hi there! I have a question concerning how I might be able to afford the college of my dreams -- Stanford. As it stands, I am a junior in a relatively high-achieving public high school in the southern United States who is from a fairly well-to-do family who, because of the economy another sibling who will be going to college one year before me, will not be able to cover the costs of the school without some form of financial aid and/or scholarships. Here is a little about myself (forgive the self-salesmanship -- I'm practicing for college!): -I am interested in going into the medical field, particularly in the area of neurology. -Currently, my GPA is a 4.0 with three AP classes and two pre-AP classes). -My highest score is 2210 on the SAT (760 Reading, 700 Math, 750 Writing + 10 on the essay). -I am currently doing biomedical research at a research center alongside graduates and post-docs. -I am also currently taking part in a hospital education group at a nearby hospital that shows the inner workings of the facility and teaches procedure. -I volunteer with community organizations such as Meals on Wheels and another one that helps women get out of the prostitution business. -I am in National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Green Club, marching band, tennis, academic decathlon, and Mensa. While I am truly hoping that the above makes me entry-level Stanford material, I have rather large doubts that the above would qualify me for anything close to a full ride. Strictly speaking, the unmitigated cost of four years at Stanford undergraduate school is around $210,000 at about $52,000 a year. Moreover, this price goes up a few thousand dollars every year. As I said earlier, without something to pay, at least partially, for college, I will not be able to attend Stanford. Furthermore, I don't think that my family qualifies for financial aid because we are approximately in the top two or three percent in terms of salary in America. While that may seem like a lot (and for normal purposes, it is), it does not come close to what we would need to pay for my college education, let alone that of my brother's who is going at the same time I am. This is compounded by the bad economy, which has significantly reduced the amount of money we are making annually. So I am feeling a little up a creek here, my dear reader. My dream college seems to sit just a few months away from me, but I fear that, even if I did get accepted there, I would not be able to afford it. If you have any experience or advice in this area or have been through a similar dilemma yourself, please do take a few minutes to share it with me. I would be so very grateful for anything helpful you have to say! Thanks for reading!  more

Open Question: Should i switch majors?

I am a biomedical engineering technology major (BMET) and thinking of switching to Electrical Engineering technology (EET). Now this fields are related in that BMET take some of the electrical classes in this major. I want to switch cause i came to a realization (finally in my junior year) that i don't really like science like that. Just pure memorizing and stress for me anyways. Ive taken a couple of the classes in this major im switching to and i like how its setup. More learning and less memorizing. Because of my major and how far i have come i don't have to do math, science or physics class just the electrical classes and it will only hold me back by a year. What do you guys think?  more

Resolved Question: Really, really, extremely long question. Please, does she want to date now? Does she even like me?

Where to start.... "Four score, and seven years..." Okay, okay...jeez. First, you'll need background info. I go to my "home school" from 8 am to 12 pm, and then attend a second school (the second school does not operate within any district, however, is accredited, and known as an innovative and hands on school world-wide. It is a high school. Center for Advanced Research and Technology. I partake in the lab known as 'Biomedical Engineering'.) All students attend "home schools" within either the cities of Fresno or Clovis (the two cities are, for all purposes of this question, one city.) Start: August 28th 2009, Location - School CART. I will refer to myself as I and I only. I will refer to my best friend as 'John' (without the apostrophes). I will refer to the female in discussion as 'Jane' (without the apostrophes). My third day at the school. The last two days, I have been sitting near the middle of the laboratory (a classroom designed also as a lab). Today, other students occupy the table John and I had previously sat at. We choose a seat in the back left of the class near the vent fumes, where another girl (call her w/e), is already seated. We ask if we may take accommodation at the table. We are received without quarrel. Next, Jane sits across from me. Each table is a rectangle, approximately 1.7 times longer than it is wide. Four seats are placed at each table. I have much to talk about with John (a bunch of crud of what else I did over the summer). He also has much to discuss. We begin discussing TV shows. John tells me of having watched all of Stargate Atlantis. I say I have watched all of Stargate SG-1. The girl not named asks us what we speak of. We say, inflatable spiders, spaceships, the kind of geeky, unimportant, uninteresting, and nerdy things we Scifi Geeks talk about. Jane smiles and chuckles silently to herself. I continue to converse with John, and noticing that Jane looks up very, very often, I signal John to discontinue conversation, and I say to Jane (of course, I did not yet know her name), "Sorry we're bothering you with really dumb conversations about spaceships and aliens, if you want, we can be quite." She replied very lightheartedly, "No, please, you don't bother me. Continue." John then says to me, "See? I told you she wasn't bothered." I nod. March 8 2010 - School CART. Enough of the drone-like typing, 'eh? Well, you've come this far, so I'll try to make it more interesting from here on out. (this is today for those you who don't keep track of time) Alright. As of late, I've noticed increased physical contact from her. By the way, she has never been kissed, is a studyholic, and by no means, a tease. She is basically, the good girl in all regards. When she's helping me with some chemistry, or just talking to me, she might be rubbing my arm, or my thighs (we sit in fairly close proximity). Her manner of speech, is well, Samantha Carter-like flirty, if you've ever watched Stargate. This last Saturday, while I spent the day at her house helping with a science project, we took a walk. During a part of the walk, we got into talking about my future, and I spoke of how I will probably never be married, due to the fact that I'm a bit abnormal. Well, she put her arm around my shoulders, and I put mine around her waist. We walked like this until we neared her house. During the course of this day, there were periodic moments where we seem to make excuses to touch the other person (hand to hand, hand to arm, such things). Oh. When we're talking, we look into each others eyes for minutes, and sometimes stop talking and just look at each other. There is no awkwardness when this happens, or at any other moment actually. During these times she sometimes puts here hands on my arms, and gently rubs it. Today, yet again, physical contact goes further. She was on her laptop, but was looking at her grade (94%), and was depressed that it was not (95%), so I took her hand (again, I did it out of instinct not really much thought), and I held it for the course of a good minute in a half, while we talked about the grade and how a (94%) is a good grade she can be proud of. A girl in our class walked by and saw us holding hands, and both of us let go and resumed talking like normal (this is not that I didn't wish to hold her hand, but to prevent her from spreading rumors that would make Jane unhappy). Christ I don't know. Oh another thing. Her parents like me. I go shopping with Jane and her mother after school sometimes. Whenever (this means all the time), we are walking (not in school), she always bumps into me, every few seconds, as do I to her. I do it because I like her and like to have her close as possible. Laugh if you want, but after seven months of knowing her, I wouldn't call it love, but I sure as hell would say I like her legitimately and a lot. The thing is..or, the reason I haven't just grabbed her and kissed her yet, I don't know if she wants me to, as apparent as I think it seems. There is one final piece to the story. I asked her to go on a date of sorts in October. She said she would like to, but had promised herself when she was in middle school, that she would not date until out of university to prevent from distracting herself. I really don't know whether to believe this, but, seeing as she has a 4.2 GPA and never been kissed, well, I guess I kinda' want to believe so I don't feel rejected again. My last question. As I said, she said she didn't want to date. But lately, she's making it really hard for me not to hold her hand when we are walking or to kiss her! I've only kissed one other girl before, so I am no professional, but I'm oh-so-tempted. Does she want me to hold her hand? Should I kiss her? If so, is she looking for a long-term relationship, looking to explore sexual desires, or does she just want to experience high school emotions, and I happen to be the guy she feels the best for the job? I don't know...I'm going insane.  more

Resolved Question: So is being a lawyer or attorney really worth it?

I have heard online that the field of law is dying and people are getting laid off left to right. The lawyers I have met have told me that it is a tough life for a lawyer and many have little time for family. They tell me that even after you finish law school, you have to work insanely long hours at a law firm and the legal profession has been hit hard by the recession. So I decided that I will stick with biomedical engineering (currently a second year college student with a 3.8 GPA) and go to med school. I think I can handle it and I have the work ethic for it, from there I plan on getting an MBA later on in life. I am only 19 so maybe my view is a bit skewed but after what I have heard, I don't think the legal profession may be worth it. Anyways, is it worth it, being a lawyer or attorney? *currently I am a student at an Ivy League institution  more

Open Question: Looking to transfer to a good school....what can i do?

Im currently attending USF in tampa. Its an ok school, but im from tampa and wanting to go somewhere else. Right now im a second semester freshman im undecided on what i want but my classes are heading me towards a science (biology, biomedical) major. I really want another chance to get into a premier school. I had stellar ACT/SAT scores, but unfortunately i did not take high school seriously enough so that wasnt enough to get me into (hopkins, georgetown, upenn, emory, etc) and i ended up going to school down the street. Now i really want to fix that. My GPA is a 3.18 now (yea i know not great), but..... what do you recommend i can do to transfer into (vanderbilt, ucberkely, ucla, umichigan, georgetown, etc)? clubs? affiliations? classes? if applying with a major other than bio or sciences is going to be easier for acceptance, i can do that. as i said, i am not really decided  more

Shes 21 and I was her only friend, I have lots of friends but she has always had legitimate social anxiety disorder (something I never believed in until knowing her for a long time) and so she has absolutely nobody. I know for a fact she spends all her time studying and crying and this hurts me to death. I'm constantly wanting to drive over to her place and hug her till she stops crying. I'm worried she'll drop out of school or be scarred for life, which would really suck since she's almost done with her biomedical engineering degree...(she's really freakin smart and gorgeous). But I gradually stopped loving her, don't know why. Now that she's gone I love her and miss her, but that's just how it goes for awhile....right? Anyway...is there any thing I can do to help her? I wish I could give her some friends or some help. We dated 3 years. Wouldn't going over and "comforting her" just make her miss me even more??? How could we possibly "just be friends" after I've been her freakin only friend/best friend/boyfriend for 3 years?  more

I spent my carefully-planned high school career maintaining a 4.40, being president of everything, and winning competitions. Open Question: Should more funding go towards excelling than towards staving off failure?

My neighbor and I have been friends since we were 4 years old, but we have many differences. The one I want to point out is this.... When I graduated high school I took a four year university course in Biomedical, he tried to jump directly to the workforce. I spent my entire savings ($15000 at the time from 6 years of summer jobs), he mooched off his parents. I worked my butt off on my off-terms to try to pay for my schooling, and even with that I'm $60,000 in debt. He can't hold down a job because when he actually has one he takes a sick day once a week (seriously, he thinks that's okay, even when he's not sick). His newest ambition is to get into welfare. And he succeeded. I want to know why those of us who worked tirelessly for years and who are tens of thousands of dollars in debt are helping to pay the taxes that put money into the pockets of young men and women who are too lazy to do something with their lives. I'm on the financial edge, working 50 hours a week trying to pay my debt off just so I can apply to Med school, while he's sitting at home living off his welfare check. Then he calls me every night saying he's bored and asking if I want to do something. I just calmly say "Sorry, I have to work!" I think the regulations for getting welfare should be stricter and should only be available to those who NEED it. As in they have no family they can fall back on, are unable to get a job, and those with no means to acquire shelter, food, and water. I don't agree with either party exclusively, but I vote Democrat...for the time being.  more

Resolved Question: How much in depth do we need to study for university?

I'm currently in my first year in biomedical science and I'm not too sure how to go about studying. We have a course workbook and during the lectures our lecturers will show us slides with answers we need to fill in the blanks with and will write stuff up as they go along. The written part is fairly summerized but they do go in depth with the summerized points during the lectures. How much in depth do we need to study if we are aiming for A+? eg will the depth of the materials examined be the depth of the lecturers explanations or the depth of the textbooks?  more

Resolved Question: What should I minor in?

I'm currently majoring in Biomedical Engineering, and plan on pursuing the branch of tissue engineering inside of BioMed. Also I plan on attending graduate school for a more advanced degree in this field. I want to minor in a tissue related subject, and was hoping to get some suggestions. As of now I'm leaning towards Molecular Genetics, Biochemistry, or Public Health. Thanks for the advice!  more

Resolved Question: Stumped about Internships. Help?

Alright so I'm a Freshman ,and recently I've been actively searching for summer internships. I was offered a Nanotech 3 week internship with a $1,200 stipend and went ahead and registered for the orientation and everything. However, I've recently found two other internships that interest me much more, they are summer biomedical research internships that also offer a nice stipend and one even pays for room, partial board, and awards college credit. As a premed student I would LOVE to land either/both of the biomedical summer research internships over the nanotech one, but my main fear is that if I pull out of the Nanotech internship and end up not being picked for either biomed internship I'll be left with no summer internship at all, which I would hate. What should I do? Should I take my chances and drop the Nanotech internship I'm pretty much guaranteed or should I go ahead and apply to both of the Biomedical Research Internships and hope I land one of those? What if I land both and the schedules/hours don't work and I have to give up one?? @Maria, Well, I've looked into and looked at the eligibility for the two Biomed research internships and I meet all the criteria, the only problem is that one is at a Med school and thats going to be naturally more competitive.. but I'm a premed and im pretty competitive myself.. I'm just not sure how intense the competetion might be.. again, its between a guaranteed mediocre internship vs a nicer competitive one.. The nanotech internship orientation is next week, one of the biomed internship application deadline is this monday, the other is April 2nd.. I seriously doubt they would delay anything for one individual, these are research/science internships and consist of groups, not single individual.  more
