Recruiting Navy Questions and Answers

Open Question: Finding a local army national guard recruiting office?

I've been doing research on the army national guard lately, and i have come to realize, i cant find any way to find my nearest recruiting office. there is a near-by army, marine, and navy office in my mall, but is talking to a regular army recruiter the same as talking to an army national guard recruiter? if not, how can i locate an office near me?  more

Open Question: Will I get the CTI rating in the NAVY?

I went to MEPS, scored an 86 on the ASVAB and signed into the Delayed Entry Program (I am currently a high school senior) with the STG rating (sonar technician). The job I really want is CTI. But, at the time, I couldn't sign in to the DEP with the CTI rating because I hadn't taken the DLAB yet. So, I chose STG, hoping that I could change jobs after I took the DLAB (and if I scored high enough to qualify). A week later, I took the DLAB and scored exactly 100. But there were no openings for me to switch jobs right away. Currently, as an STG, my ship date isn't until December, so I have some time. My recruiter says she will be checking up on the openings every month, and I will keep calling her because I really REALLY want to go in with the CTI rating! I know my score is the bare minimum, but I am very determined to go to the DLI. The only thing I'm worried about is getting stuck with STG. Is it unlikely there will be no openings for me all the way up to December? or that other recruits will get the job over me due to my score? I have grandparents who have served 20 plus years in the NAVY, would calling them and asking for their support help in getting that job? My recruiter says I have a lot of time and that they see a lot of job openings during May because of kids who end up not graduating from high-school. But I won't feel completely comfortable until what I want is guaranteed to me and that I KNOW I'll get the CTI rating. Also, with my score, what kind of languages would I get to study at the DLI? Thanks! All answers and info would be much appreciated :)  more

Resolved Question: Military Girlfriends/Wives?

My fiance is seriously considering the military at the moment. Actually right now as I type this, he's at a Navy recruiting office. What is it like being in love with a guy who's going into the military? What are the pros and cons? I love him so much and I just want to know what I'm going to have to deal with and what it's going to be like for me when/if he is deployed. I'm fully aware that there's a possibility of our relationship ending, but I don't believe it will. I'm not going into detail about our relationship depth, because honestly that's no ones business but ours. I asked "What is it like being in love with a guy who's going into the military? What are the pros and cons?" That's all I want to know. Also, I'm not going to love him any different. I'm not questioning the fact of whether I'll still love him or not. I just want to know what it's going to be like for me. Correction, he was at an Air Force Recruiting Office, not a Navy one.  more

I am going to join later this summer regardless, but for my own knowledge I wanted to know if demand for new recruits is high or low..  more

Resolved Question: Can you transfer from the Nuclear program (Navy) to Army?

I know I made the decision to join on my own, and I should have been more careful, and I should just tough it out. I know that. Just stating that now, since it is the most common answer. :P Anyways, I made a foolish decision to join something I didn't want to be apart of. I fell for every recruiting trick in the book. It is BORING and very difficult...and will be taking up 6 years of my life doing something I don't want. I am not the average "I-hate-the-navy" guy that wants out...I try very hard, and do my job without complaining, and am average in my class. I just want to know, is it too late to switch to army? Is there any possible way? My gut instinct was to become an Army Ranger like the rest of my family, that is truly what I want to do. I have head of the Blue to Green program but don't know many of the details. If there are any Army recruiters out there who know any loop holes, please let me know. By the way, I am an E-4 with a little more than a year under my belt.  more

Resolved Question: Should I believe the navy graduation date my recruit gave me or the one on the website?

My boyfriend is off at Navy Basic training. Today we got the packet of graduation information. In the packet it says that his graduation is on April 9th. He is in DIV 143. On the website (http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/families.asp) it says TG 20 (07) Divisions (139 – 144 & 920) Graduate Friday, 02 Apr 10 Which one should I believe and order plane tickets for?  more

Open Question: What happens if you have gone to MEPS for one branch of the military and you change your mind on branch?

I'm currently working with a recruiter in the Navy and have gone though the security clearance, physical, tons and tons of paperwork at MEPS. And after all the hoops i've had to jump through to be "eligible" for service, I'm currently ready to DEP in but the job I want is currently unavailable. I've been patient for the last three months waiting and at the moment, I feel like exploring other branch options would be a wise choice but am unsure if it is beyond that point or if I'm even allowed to just stroll into another branches' recruiting office, specially when they are across the lobby at our local mall. Any suggestions on what the procedure looks like? Some other details....I'm currently a US Resident and failed my depth perception test. The jobs available for me under those circumstances are pretty slim. So, I would like to go for something I would enjoy (corpsman) rather than anything available (aircraft mechanic, etc).  more

Resolved Question: If you have a GED and have a misdemeanor, does that stop you from getting into the NAVY?

I went to the NAVY recruit place today and I was going to sign up. The guy asked if I had a high school diploma, I said no, I have a GED. He said ide have to go to college and get 15 credits. Then he also asked if I had a record, I said yes a misdemeanor. He said the Navy wouldnt even take someone with a misdemeanor. Resolved Question: How do I start off as a higher pay grade in the Navy?

I heard you could start of as a E2 by recruiting others and stuff. I heard something about vocational school hours, but the vocational school I go to is high school courses. I memorized the enlisted, warrant officer, and commissioned officer ranks, the sailors creed, and the 11 general orders of sentry. Will that get me anywhere?  more

Voting Question: Can I get a waiver for USAF?

I contacted a recruiter this morning and was told that I would not be able to get a waiver from the Air Force because of an issue I had 3.5 years ago (possession of paraphernalia). Is it worth it to contact a different recruiter and see what he/she says? I say this because I thought that I wanted to join the Navy and had contacted a recruiting office and was told by the lady that I was automatically disqualified, I then called another recruiter and he was great I got a waiver no problem.  more

Resolved Question: Wondering if I could join the Marines.?

I am 18, turning 19 in March. I had a brain injury in 07, and a visit to a psychiatric clinic/hospital, which I know will be on my health record if looked for. I have a high school diploma and I have almost 2 years of machining school done in a 3 year program. I know when it comes to being Army Ranger and Navy SEAL you have to pass a psych process but for now I'm just focusing on getting through talking with a recruit about enlisting with the Marines. Voting Question: If i say that I have smoked pot in the past at MEPS, will i still be able to join the navy?

I failed a drug test at my recruiting station, but my recruiter said it was not a big deal, we'll just wait a couple weeks before I go to MEPS. She gave me a huge packet of background information to fill out, and told me to fill out the drug use section honestly... I said I have tried it 4 times. But my boyfriend is in the navy, and he told me that they will not pass you at MEPS if you admit to ever having tried it. I really, really want to join, but I'm afriad I screwed myself up. What should I do?!?! Oh, and I have not turned in the background information packet yet, so my boyfriend is sugguesting I tell those recruiters nevermind, wait for the weed to get out of my system, and go to another recruiting station, but I'm afriad I'll be in some big system already, and they'll catch me. I don't want to lie, but I don't know what to do!! Does anyone know what the waivers for that kind of stuff are about?  more

Resolved Question: What would be the perfect World War 3 military strategy? Who Will be involved?

Basically, World War 3 is coming. Nothing will stop it. I would enlist right away. I like to think of strategies and the military in general. If i were in charge of the US in world war 3, i would first throw away the chaos and arguments that would tear the country apart before any other country has us on target. I would send the whole diplomacy and alliance message to the former countries we sided with for the first 2 world wars. Then i would build the defenses around the country. for example. New York was a huge target for 9/11, and it will still be a huge target today. I would build surrounding Air Bases, Army Bases, and i would totally reconstruct the coast of NYC into a strategic defense. I would build the navy to double the quota in world war 2, i would draft the people who are able to fight. I would turn the recruiting process into the biggest infantry in the world. Basically, i would make sure we had alliances with all of the border countries, and protect the border countries the same way we would protect our own. After all of the defenses have been prepared for, i would begin deploying with the defenses in all borders and both oceans. and the parts of our military made for assault will slowly begin moving forward in key directions, establishing the same diplomacy and allegiance with trusting countries. and i could go on with this idea for hours, but ill get into what i would think the factions would be: US, UK, CANADA, ISRAEL, TAIWAN, SOUTH KOREA, AUSTRALIA, JAPAN(since we are practically their army now), PHILLIPINES, NATO FORCES, and others that depend on U.S. suppport vs. CHINA, NORTH KOREA, PAKISTAN, IRAQ, IRAN, SYRIA, PALESTINE, and others that depend on their support. countries that would be questionable are : RUSSIA, ITALY, SPAIN, FRANCE, GERMANY, SWITZERLAND, and others. I ACCEPT ALL OPINIONS, PLEASE SHARE!!!!!  more

Voting Question: Do you agree with what this marine said? (long)?

His wife is in the army, his contract w/ marines was up so he joined army too. I might seem biased having come from the marines...but simply put...because I did marine bootcamp...I am exempt from all other services basic training. It's longer and designed to be the most physically and mentally challenging of all of the armed forces. Marines are expected to be the best and we are feared worldwide. I joined the marines based on Marine Corps tales I've heard of fearless warriors. I saw it first hand in Iraq when faced with an almost impossible situation and surrounded by enemies. The Army took cover in a hallway and weren't sure what to do. The Marines were already pouring out the door to face the enemy toe to toe. I'm not saying all of the Soldiers are cowards but Marines always seem to be ready to throw down with the enemy in any situation thrown at them. We are abused physically and mentally. (by physically I mean sometimes violently. They say they aren't supposed to do it anymore but they do, and thank God for it) The army has changed significantly over the years...they are expirimenting with trying to create better soldiers. They borrow much of the training from the Marines nowadays, but the stress level has toned down alot because the army now believes it's better to mentor to soldiers than to destroy them mentally. Violence is not tolerated in army BCT and some of the units no longer punish privates like they used to. There is a governing authority over the training environment now called TRADOC. any sergeant or higher can tell you right away they hate tradoc. It basically takes away their authority to control the privates. Now from the time they leave bootcamp and go to AIT they become undisciplined and disrespectful to those above them. This of course changes when they get to their actual units though. I'm hoping they change it because a softer army is a weaker army. Te AIT students think they are in high school and here to party. Mentally and physically it is still challenging I'm sure. It will still change them. The other services don't really depend on breaking their recruits down as much because the same level of combat discipline isn't required. Honestly though I've never really seen many undisciplined navy guys. They obviously must be doing something right. I'm hoping I can gain rank quickly in the army in an attempt to try to change TRADOC. it's a plague to the army and it's something that would be good to do away with. You're angry because of what another marine said, not because of me. If you don't believe me that's fine, I could care less. Could be just coincidence, but the guy that said it is also named Brandon lol. If you're the guy and you found this, sorry but I haven't said anything disrespectful.  more

Voting Question: What are the best military jobs to have?

So, I was looking at joining the Navy under the Nuclear Program. I am very, very interested in joining (mostly because I don't to pay for college) the military, but some testimonials and a tour around a ship scared me away from the NF. Right now I am kinda window shopping all the recruiting spots, but they only talk about the positions they are told to fill. I got a 92 Asvab, and I HATE most things that have to do with circuits. Anybody got some cool suggestions or ideas that don't strap you to a desk but are relatively technical? PS, special ops isn't my thing  more

Resolved Question: How can the Navy pay for my college?

I'm planning on becoming a SEAL after four years of college, and my number one university, Santa Clara University, doesn't have NROTC. Santa Clara costs upwards of $50,000 a year, and my parents and I cannot afford that kind of money. I know I could go to another school, but after an exhaustive college search and a few recruiting trips to various schools, I know Santa Clara is the school for me. I also know that I can't go unless I can find some way to pay for it without putting myself in debt. I'm fine with enlisting or getting my commission after college, so any ideas as to how the navy could help me pay?  more

Resolved Question: Should I get a different recruiter?

After much thought I decided I wanted to join the Navy Im 31 married with 2 Kids and a senior in college. Anyways so I went to see a Navy recruit in July 09 and set up a time to take the ASVAB and past it with no problems. After I past the ASVAB we set another time to meet to sign for a dependent waiver (married w/ 2 kids)...did came back ok but said I was still disapproved because I needed a moral waiver (minor traffic violations) ... So we sent it out in August 09. I called my recruiter every other week for 4 months and nothing came back and he said that MEPS still had it (now December) and he would find out what's going on with my waiver. He called a day later saying meps was waiting for a the best time to send my waiver so it would get approved. I asked him when would that be and my recruiter said the first week of Jan 2010 so... I waited another month called him back and he says we have to rewrite and do the whole process over again with both waivers because the paper work expired. I set another time and day to do the waivers with him and he said that was fine. ...THEN he calls back an hour later says he has to go out of town that day. Do you think I'm getting BS around and should I get a new recruiter or is this the way the Navy works? Thank you for your time.  more

Resolved Question: Why do some soldiers act like 'if you didn't serve, you weren't good enough to serve'?

One quote for example "those who can serve, do, those who can't, don't".... Is it just a matter of arrogance for a job that actively recruits 18 year olds straight out of high school and requires nothing more than the 50th percentile on their standardized test? Take a neurosurgeon for example. 4 Years of undergrad training (let's assume started at 18). 4 Years of medical school 6 Years of Neurosurgery residency that's 32 years old before being to practice. Many Neurosurgeons also get PhD's which is another 5 years, and that's the essential minimum (starting medical school at 22 (average age is 24)). 4 - 8 years added to that by serving in the military really the best interest of the surgeon and those he treats? Clearly there has to be people who can serve but don't. Military have > 2 million personnel. They beg for people to join with multibillion dollar add campaigns and recruitment letters (I get 4-5 letters from the Navy HPSP every month trying to get me to join the HPSP). What would drive a soldier to say such an ignorant thing like "those who can serve, do, those who can't, don't" ? Neurosurgeon reference was just an analogy. IE, that soldier who said "if you didn't serve, you were not good enough to serve" is claiming many people along with some neurosurgeons (only around 2,500 of them in the US), a profession that requires 14+ years of training after they turn 18 before they can practice is somehow inferior. Doctors in the military don't go through "OCS". Most either enter the military medical school (very low admission standards compared to "civilian medical schools" or join the HPSP. Doctors in the military (HPSP or otherwise) are only allowed to treat soldiers, or special case individuals. Civilian doctors can treat soldiers, foreigners and anybody else. Primary reason any doc joins the military is for the money (HPSP pays 100% of medical school and also pays the student ~ $2.2k a month).  more

omg...s00oo... i was completely excited about joining the navy...and all of a sudden...im scared as shit. like.. im so afraid my whole identity will be ripped from me. im an artist..and i love music, piercings, tatoos, playing guitar, dancing (ballet)....and im afraid i wont have time for those things i really love to do. i joined because i thought it was the right decision at the time (having no job, no means of money, no where to really live, or getting into college). my family tries to talk me out of it everyday (even tho..they'd rather me be homeless than to live with them) and now i have "cold-feet". is this normal? do all recruits get this feeling before boot camp? or should i really reconsider.  more

Voting Question: Does every Navy recruit receive one phone call when they first arrive?

My fiance left for Naval boot camp on Sunday. He called from the hotel and told us Tuesday that he was leaving from the hotel for actual training. He also said that on Tuesday they were going to a Bulls game at the United Center as a treat and they were doing something special during half time at the game. He called from one of the recruits phones during the third quarter of the game around 8:00pm to remind me that he would be calling when he arrived. I stayed up until 2 in the morning waiting on his call and I never received one. I asked his family members did any of them receive a call they all said no. But yesterday I received all of his civilian belongings in the mail so I know he's there. Does every recruit receive a phone call when they first arrive?  more

Resolved Question: Second-hand marijuana smoke?

About 2 weeks ago I was at the Big Day Out, a huge music festival in Australia. I was caught in the thick of a crowd of literally hundreds of people, and couldn't move an inch in any direction. A group next to me lit up joints and the smoke was really strong. As soon as I smelt it I held my breath and tried not to inhale any. Every time I had to breathe in I could taste it on my lips so I breathed in as shallowly as possible until I could tell it went away. My concern is, I may have to undergo drug testing for the Royal Australian Navy soon. I'm not sure when as it's a drawn out process and they call on you at short notice. Does anyone know if any of the marijuana will show up in my results? They have a zero tollerance for drugs. Has anyone else been caught for a similar thing while trying to recruit into the Defence Force? I'll be devastated if I'm affected by this. I've been training for months. If you're a pot smoker, smoke it at home. To add more information - it lasted maybe a minute or two.  more

Resolved Question: As a Filipino, will you back up the idea of full military invasion of Sabah, Malaysia?

Just for the sake of argument. I for one is backing up the idea. But first let me explain why. Why do we have to take back what rightfully belongs to the Philippines in the first place. I guess some of you know the Jabidah massacre or otherwise known as corregidor massacre of March 18,1968. The issue of Sabah as a property of the Sultanate & still the extension of the Republic of the Philippines is still pending. The idea of then late Phil. President Macapagal & Marcos to create or established military unit tasked with fomenting dissent amongst Sabah's non-Malay ethnic groups namely the Tausug & Sama, two groups closely aligned ethically and culturally with the Bangsamoro. Recruited 28 Moro Muslim for training and once they all found out the real truth behind it,wanted to quit & were all killed but one survived that is why it was exposed. Turned to the negotiating table between the Malaysian government and the Philippines government about a concrete plan of giving back Sabah. And if they refuse we go to war. Just for argument I know for sure the Philippines will not go to that length of engaging to war just to win back something like Sabah. In 1982, when Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands which is a territory of England, Prime Minister Thatcher immediately send the Royal British Navy and Air Force to win back the Falklands. And they did. Ok we are not like the British. We are a peaceful loving citizen whose only fault is being poor in character, mind and hearts. In fact, history told us that we are often been invaded by foreign forces and we do not even have the the luxury of invading other countries. But I think we should priorities where our bravery should lies. Remember the lines "ang mamatay ng dahil sa iyo". If only Macapagal or Marcos done it right in those critical times I guess we shouldn't be arguing about Sabah, don't we? What do you think?  more

Resolved Question: Navy enlistment job recommendations?

I will be joining the Navy a little late on this year, and was wanting to get some opinions on jobs I should do. I took the practice ASVAB at the Navy recruiting office and scored a 93 out of 99. They said I would pretty much be able to choose whatever I wanted and I'm really not sure which direction to go. They were talking about Nuke but I don't know if I want to do with all of the science that goes along with it. I'm thinking about doing Air Traffic Control. I want something that would help me get a nice job when I finish up in 5 years. I would try and go in as an officer, but then I wouldn't qualify for the loan repayment program. Thanks! Also, I am graduating from Indiana University with a Bachelor's in General Studies in May.  more

Resolved Question: is the army as bad as everyone says?

i'm thinking of joining the army, everyone tells me not to, i was enlisted in the navy i've been out for about two years now. i know the army scrapes the bottom of the barrel when it comes to recruits but there's idiots every where you go. i'm not worried about being deployed, i don't know for sure but i don't think iraq or Afghanistan is as bad as the news makes it out to be. i got out because i was envious of civilian life but i've come to realize that this life sucks balls and i would rather have a purpose in life... how hard is another 20 years, a retirement would be good to have also.  more

Not in recruit training, obviously, but what about while you're in school? Also, can I get away with asthma? I mean, its barely asthma at all, and I'm obviously gonna lie about it, but are the instructors gonna get all pissed after we run a mile and give a cough or two?  more

Resolved Question: USMC very slight cerebral palsy?

i want to enlist into the United States Marine Corps. i have wanted to enlist for a long time. upon graduating high school and getting my running up to snuff, i feel ready to enlist. i talked with a recruiter over the phone, and he said he would get back to me in a couple of days. i talked to him about my cerebral palsy. i have (no exaggeration) the slightest case of cerebral palsy ever recorded, possibly. it is in my left foot. my toes are slightly curved and deformed. i run 5 miles every day in boots. i can run, jump, kick, swim, and anything else that requires feet work. my cerebral palsy does not effect my performance in any way shape or form. cerebral palsy is an automatic disqualification to serve in the US Marine Corps. i told my recruiter about my CP, and he said that he would have to pull a lot of strings to get the proper waivers. he told me that my medical documents and records will have to be sent all the way down to Washington D.C. and looked at by US Navy medical personnel. the Navy medical personnel will determine weather i am fit to serve or not. i hate to think negative, but i highly doubt they are going to approve. but they do not know what they are giving up if they do not approve. i am in top physical condition, i have superb reflexes and i am very very disciplined. i am a good listener and i ALWAYS put the directions first. i have more motivation to become a Marine and serve 150% than an entire battalion of recruits put together. it is my dream to become a US Marine. i guess my question is...what do you think will happen? as i said my CP does not interfere with my performance at all in any way. it is like it is not even there. but i am technically diagnosed with it. just because it says it on the god damn papers. that might ruin my dream. what do you think will happen? thank you for your time and answers.  more

Resolved Question: Bathroom breaks in Navy bootcamp?

I keep hearing different things... will someone who has been there (preferably recently) tell me? Do individuals have the ability to request permission to use the head even during any given class or training? Or must all recruits be given a break at the same time at scheduled times? I just want to be able to use the restroom when i need to and come back... im just curious.no big deal. im more concerned about the vaccinations. i hate shots  more

Voting Question: Navy Recruiter Taking Forever!?

It has been 6 months since I first visited the recruiters office. That evening I took the EST and scored an 89 because I was kind of rushing it and signed all of the medical records release forms and all that wonderful stuff. I had two surgeries one when I was 12 and one at 14 that we needed to get records for. My recruiter was pretty lazy about trying to get the records so I ended up doing most of the leg work to get them faxed to the recruiting office which ended up taking about 3 months. Then another two months passes and with a little prodding from me, my recruiter finds out that my whole package needs to be resubmitted because there was to much of a time gap between the first bit of papers and my medical coming in. Long story short it has been another two months and still no word and I can't get anything out of my recruiter. What should/can I do? I'm trying to go nuke and get an age waiver and I'm not getting any younger.  more

Voting Question: Can I join the US Navy with migraines?

Hi all! I'd like to join the US Navy as a career. I've worked hard to get to where I'm at in my life. I lost a ton of fat (55 pounds and 10 inches off my waist) and I have an Associate's degree and a Bachelor's degree. I love to travel and serve my country on top of putting in my retirement pension time too with lots and lots of other benefits. However, I do sometimes suffer from migraines. I've never been clinically diagnosed as having migraines but I get about 1 - 2 of them a week. However, I can always remedy them with Tylenol, Excedrin Migraine medicine, some rest, etc. I've been getting migraines all my life as as far as I can remember. Will any US Navy recruiter disqualify me automatically for it from joining anyway? Someone told me that she's going into the Marines and she said they didn't mind it because they'd be willing to work with her condition. I'll be okay as long as I always have access to take my medicine whenever I have to. We're all human. Nobody has picture perfect health. The whole US military has a huge shortage now because so many potential recruits can't join because they're either overweight or obese. I would think any branch in the military would have to work with people on various issues to get recruits anyway. What do you think? Thanks!  more

Voting Question: what is the minimal asvab score required for enlistment in the navy.?
