Parrots For Sale Questions and Answers

Resolved Question: is it "bad' to buy an adult parrot?

A couple years ago I was interested in this Congo African Grey who was 8 years old and was for sale. I talked to the woman on the phone and she told me a lot about the bird, mostly good stuff. I had asked someone I know (who has had a CAG for about 10 years now, and has had a Quaker and various Cockatiels before that for much longer) and she said that buying an adult bird runs you a big risk of getting one with issues, whether they are mild (like screaming) or dangerous (biting every man it meets, for instance) I am seeing "adult" birds pop up everywhere. There's a 4 year old CAG for sale, and a 20 year old Umbrella Cockatoo (who, from his pictures, looks like a complete clown!) I know Parrots can live to be 40 years, easy. If I go and meet a bird, and 'test' it, what are the chances it'll still turn out to be nuts?  more

Resolved Question: Where can I purchase a Toucanlet or Aracaris bird?

We have been preparing to get a bird for some time now. Doing lots of research on what types of bird would be good for us (our lives, schedules, and living space). Our living room is done in a safari theme, and we are even building a custom "play area" with manzanita branches. We were pertty sure that we would go for a bird in the parrot family (possibly small macaw, quaker, or even a few senegal parrots), and then suddenly - I saw a Toucanet/Aracaris bird (mini Toucan). They are just so beautiful, and smart too. Although they do not talk, they are still extremely smart birds with amazing personalities. But, where can I find one of these birds for sale or adoption? What do they cost? so that I can be prepared and not scammed? I live in upstate New York, if that is at all important. Thanks for your advice/help  more

Resolved Question: Should I let go of my dream and move on?

Just wondering if you where me would you stay or go? In 2006 in Texas I had a spiritual awakening..I had been fasting from media, food, water, and sleep...and starting speaking in tongues on the 7th day and had a vision of a house with Nome's and fairies and and a labyrinth and merlin the wizard had came to visit me with a white owl and told me that if I connected the past with the present that I would build a spiritual retreat that my family would teach at. Merlin told me about Terah dying in Haran and how my family was connected to Abraham in the bible. Our last name is Teran. The visions went on for hours. I went to my husband and he at the time thought I had gone mad. This was the first time I had ever fasted and I did it on my own so I thought this is what happened to everyone. I tried to go to the library and research this after it happened and found no answers. I let it go and 3 years had passed and one night at 2 am I was awakened by a voice that told me to look up our last name Teran on google and go to page 6 on there I found a website called talk to Teran. I got goose bumps from head to toe. The owners of the website had a spiritual retreat for sale called Circle of Teran in Ashland Oregon. They had just built it a few years before. On the property the have a labyrinth like the one I had in my vision and had a room called Merlin's sanctuary with white owls, and a fairy room, all the visions I had where actually a place in Ashland Oregon. NOt only was the property named our last name Teran but where it is located Ashland is my 10 year old daughters name. Well her name is Ashland which means dream. I was going to name her Ashland but at the time of her birth I changed it cause I thought it was corny to have A daughter named Ashland and another daughter named Ireland. So i did more research on the property that night and found out the property was previously owed by the Ireland's and the Circle of Teran ranch was formerly Ireland ranch. I immediately got my husband and showed him all the connections and at that moment he knew everything I had told him 3 years prior was true. He said we are supposed to move there.. So we packed up our 6 kids, the parrot, the dog, the cat, the frogs, the turtles, the ferret, and the snake and set out for Ashland Oregon in September 2009. We knew it would take some time to get the money together for the property. At the same time that we felt led to this property my husband was placed in front of several big life changing deals. There were two separate partners with several different deals (Let's call them Partner A and Partner B). If just one of these deals were to go through we would have enough to accomplish purchasing the property. So, we moved to Oregon on the faith and hope that this was our path. When we get to Oregon partner A continues promising us a payout out week after week but it never comes. Although, we made the move up to Oregon and now are in a position with no steady income, we have reached a critical point. We have ran out of money till the other partner B's deals pay. So we are wondering what to do now? We are currently staying in a extended stay hotel and we have to check out in 2 days do to running out of funds. Partner B deals are supposed to pay in 2 weeks. BUt what is a family of 8 with all these animals supposed to do until then? Do I give up on all this and go back to Texas? I dont even know how we would get back to Texas..We are so close to the finish line but I am so scared of the idea of living in the car.. I dont know who to turn to.. Any idea's?? I am 30 years old my husband is 37 and we have 3 daughters ages 13, 10, 5 and 3 sons ages 3 years old and 2 years old and a 11 month old. the property is 14.6 millions dollars.  more

Resolved Question: Do you have a nest box in your parrots cage even if you don't breed your parrot?

I'm trying to make my Eclectus parrots cage a bit more interesting for him. I often see "Birdee bunks" for sale and I was wondering if parrots like to sleep or play in nest boxes? I don't plan on breeding him or anything, so do parrots only use nest boxes when they breed or do they like to use them other times as well? I know this question may sound silly but the breeder who I bought him from over a year ago had a pair (not his parents) that had a nest box attached to their play stand. As it was on their play stand I assumed it was just for play, not the box that would be used for actual nesting. I remember the female poking her head in and out like she was playing peekaboo but I can't remember if the male really took much interest in it. What do you think? Does any body else have a nest box in their parrots cage? Does your parrot sleep in it? I probably will make one rather than buy one as it would be cheaper. I'm not even sure if he would use it has he hasn't had one all this time any way...  more

Resolved Question: Parrot scam? PLEASE HELP!?

I am looking to buy an African Grey Parrot. I saw an advert saying 6 month old congo african grey parrot for sale £200 and I contacted the advertiser. I have been sending emails back and forth to this selling - his name is Chris Bobby. We have spoken on the phone briefly too. but a few things are worrying me about the information I have been provided and the price he is asking for seems TO GOOD TO BE TRUE?? Could this be a scam, I dont know?! The advert stated he was based in London, however since I have been in contact he said to me that he now lives in Scotland (I am from Southampton). - He clearly isn't english as his grammer is terrible. - and when I asked for pictures, he sent me some he copied from google and renamed them the names of his (supposed parrots!) He has said to me that if I provide him with my home address he can organise a pet courier to deliver the parrot to me and I pay the full price of £200 to the courier on delivery! Ive read about parrot scams, but what I dont understand is - if this is a scam how is he going to scam money from me if i dont pay anything until I have the bird in my hand??? My sister thinks its a scam and said I need to walk away now... Please tell me what you think?! I just confronted him and this was his reply: Hello Claire, The things you saw over there were posted by me and i was asked to do by my friends since they pay me for that. I did so so that when anyone interested gets in touch i would inform the friends. Thanks for all you accusation but i have something for you. Now thank God that you gave me your address and to prove to you that i am what you take me for,i would soon be at your address and i would come along with the birds. My boss would give me a day off since i have explained the matter to him. once HE DOES I WOULD COME OVER TO YOUR ADDRESS AND WHICH THE BIRDS AND THEIR CAGE TO PROVE TO YOU THAT I AM NOT WHAT YOU TAKE ME FOR. BUT I WOULD COME ALONG WITH POLICE AND MY MOTHER HAS ALREADY GO ME A LAWYER IN LONDON. THANKS GOD MY MUM IS IN LONDON AND WE WOULD BE AT YOUR PLACE WITH BIRDS AND THE POLICE I JUST HAVE TO TELL YOU THAT THINGS WOULD GO FAR STOP AND NEVER IN YOUR LIFE TIME ACCUSE SOMEONE FALSELY  more

Resolved Question: Three birds I'm wanting to sell?

Alright I own three birds, a greater sulfur cokatoo, african grey, and a double yellow amazon. They all are friendly (especially the cokatoo) and deserve a better home (I'm never home anymore..). I was wondering if I were to sell these birds (which are in great health, a don't pluck) what would be a sale price for them? They are all fairly young-ish (for parrots), the african grey is 6. I know the cokatoo is the eldest, he's about 15 now.  more

Resolved Question: POLL: does anyone know what this is an example of?

Star? Not I! Movie – it too has a star in or a cameo who wore mask – cast are livewires. Soda-pop straws are sold, as part-encased a hot tin, I saw it in mad dog I met. Is dog rosy? Tie-dye booths in rocks. All ewes lessen ill. I see sheep in Syria? He, not I, deep in Syria, has done. No one radio drew old one. Many moths – I fondle his; no lemons are sold. Loot delis, yob, moths in a deli bundle his tin. Pins to net a ball I won – pins burst input. I loot to get a looter a spot paler. Arm a damsel – doom a dam. Not a base camera was in a frost, first on knees on top spot. Now a camera was a widened dam. Ask: Cold, do we dye? No, hot – push tap, set on to hosepipe. Nuts in a pod liven. A chasm regrets a motto of a fine veto of wars. Too bad – I all won. A sadist sent cadets – a war reign a hero derides. A bad loser, a seer, tossed a cradle – he begat to cosset – a minaret for Carole, Beryl, Nora. We’re not as poor to self. I risk cold as main is tidal. As not one to delay burden, I don’t set it on “hot”. A foot made free pie race losses runnier. As draw won pull, eye won nose. Resolved Question: I'm a liberal and I own several guns I'm not fooled into voting for Republican fear mongers are you?

I am aware that the "their going to take our guns" rhetoric has gotten a lot of Republicans elected. It is one way a person who wants America to fail can get people to vote for them. People are catching on so now it is "you're not going to be able to buy ammo." I see parrots here saying "what about the ammo shortage." But you can get it at every Walmart in the USA and the local bait shop even has ammo on sale duh. The D&R Sportshop in Kalamazoo MI for instance has ammo on sale and it is a huge place with tons of ammo. I have no doubt that it is the same all over America except maybe on Faux News. Why are so many so easy to fool????????????? P.S. I will also harvest five deer again this season (legally) and give most to people who are too old to hunt any more or others who need help because the Republicans have ruined our economy.  more

Resolved Question: No scam parrot breeder sites?

I need some reliable breeder sites that have parrots, specifically an African Grey (preferably Congo) for sale for less than $1000. Also they must have shipping. I've searched but couldn't find any good sites. And there aren't any breeders in my area, so I've resorted to an online breeder. Please don't tell me "Getting a pet online isn't good" or something like that, please... If you know of any reliable online parrot breeders, please tell me. Thanks so much :)  more

Resolved Question: I shot the parrot...?

A woman went to a pet store one day, looking for something for her family to replace a cockatoo they had given away. While looking around the store, she notices a parrot on sale for $5. She asks the clerk: "Why is that parrot so inexpensive?" She replies: "You see, that parrot belonged to a Madam, and after living in a brothel it's entire life, he picked up the ability to talk. But he tends to say the wrong thing at the wrong time." She shrugs, buys the parrot, and takes it home. After being put in it's cage for the first time, he says: "Hmm...new brothel." Regular speech, no screeching or any other animal noises. The woman's two daughter walk in, mid to late teens. "Hmm...new brothel, new girls." The girls gawk around the parrot until their father walks through the door. "Hmm... new brothel, new girls, same customers."  more

Voting Question: Caique as a Companion Parrot?

I had a sudden miscarriage a few months ago followed by the very sudden death of both of my grandmother, whom I was very, very close to. As a result I've become depressed. I am also a prior parront to a number of budgies and cockatiels. A few months ago I went into my local pet store to get some fish food for my betta and they had a White-Bellied Caique for sale. He still had his juvenile plumage, so he couldn't have been very old. Well anyway, the manager let me handle the Caique and I instantly fell in love with him. He surfed on my hands and in my hair, groomed me, and various other antics. I went in about once a week to visit with the manager and the Caique. I was intent on purchasing him, but the last time I went in, he had been sold. I have an opportunity to purchase a young bird that I can finish hand-raising from a local-ish woman (about 150miles away). However, I work about 20 hrs a week and have school for 2 hrs in the morning. My fiance is at the house when I'm not, and I'm there when he's not, etc. So what I'm asking is if a Caique would make a good companion parrot (I've researched a lot about them, and they seem like it, but i want to hear from an actual owner) and if I should wait to get a weaned one instead of finishing the hand raising. I would prefer hand raising. I have hand raised one bird, but that was a mockingbird hatchling (he was released back into the wild after learning how to find food, etc.) Thanks for your time!  more

Resolved Question: Where you ever embarrassed to tell the truth about someone?

Here your walking down the street and you pass a pet store. There is a big parrot in the window and it lifts its head up looks right at ya and says "YOUR UGLY!" You dismiss this and chuckle, thinking it was just something the parrot learnt and it had no idea what it was really saying. You stood aside and decided you would observe the bird. It looked at other passer byes but it didn't say anything. You went just a bit closer and the bird got sight of ya and lifted its head and said "YOUR UGLY". You left disturbed. The next several days, it happened again and again every time you passed the pet store the bird lifted its head and said, "YOUR UGLY!" You couldn't take it anymore so you went inside the pet store and complained. The manager explained the bird is not for sale, its just for display and that he would take it off display. Aww a week of silence and no bird to bother you on your way back and forth to work. One day you were with a friend and you passed by that way again and you seen the bird and it put its head down and said "YOU KNOW!" SKARBEENA SIZE 10!  more

Resolved Question: Is this ad for a African grey parrot a scam?

I was looking at this ad, and it seemed perfect for me. Nearby, great price, nice sounding bird, etc. I realize it is amazingly cheap but I figured it was because of the economy and she said she has to move, so I assumed she needs a quick sale. BUT, right when I started to get excited I noticed that in one picture, the bird resembles a Timneh Grey, because it has a pale upper mandible, and in another picture it resembles a Congo grey, because its upper mandible is solid black. Is it possible for the color to change? I hope it is not a scam. Here is the link: http://indianapolis.kijiji.com/c-Pets-Birds-Friendly-African-Grey-W0QQAdIdZ137171749  more

Resolved Question: Parrot flight aviator?

I have an amazon parrot who screams alot, and had a parrot sales brochure come through today and seen the parrot harness and flight lines how easy is it to train a parrot to fly with the use of a harness as they sound great fun for me and Charlie and would be good exercise for him to keep him in good health. Also Thinking along the lines that if he has enough exercise which he probably doesnt get at the moment cause he can only fly around the house he may not scream as often. I dont want to pay out alot of money if they are not that good or hard to handle as he is not an ''obedient bird'' he does exactly as he pleases most of the time do they need to be well trained to use one of these flight lines?? Dont get me wrong when i say hes not obedient im very right in this but i can handle him hes very tame (with me) Wacky read the question properly!!!!!!!! He needs a harness so i can attatch him to a flight line and let him fly out in the open fields safely  more

Resolved Question: has anyone made a wild parrot tame?

we are looking for our first parrot and have decided on an amazon like an orange winged or blue fronted. we have seen alot for sale that are semi-tame which wont bite you but just dont want to be stroked. if we buy a semi tame one will we get it tame if we spend alot of time with it? has anyone else had one that wasnt tame and got it tame and how long did it take? im not expecting it to become tame in a few weeks or anything. there is alot of price difference between a fully tame one and a semi tame one as the fully tame ones are around £800 plus they need a cage where i can rehome one from someone that doesnt want it anymore for £300 with the cage but it just needs some work we have never had a parrot before but we always research loads and make sure we are housing and feeding the parrot correctly. any advice is welcome. we dont live in an apartment. we have a house which we own so even if the neighbours complain we dont have a land lord so cant get evicted or anything. i know about parrots plucking feathers and wouldnt buy one that did feather pluck as i know it is hard to make them stop if ever and the budget we have got for one will mean we can afford a much better parrot than a feather plucker.  more

Resolved Question: information on finches....?

I recently bought an Australian Shaft Tailed Finch. Before I bought it the sales lady told me to be careful not to let him out of his cage for fear that he might fly head first into a wall, window,or mirror. Not only that, they poop a LOT and are hard to catch. I put him in a decent size cage.He has food, water,a bath,a nest, a swing, and two horizontal poles to sit on. I want to be able to have him fly around a bit and feed him out of my hand. He's a very pretty bird and sings a nice tune. But I can't even get a hand on him to take him out of the cage - he's fast. I want to get him a companion, but not another finch. I'd appreciate any recommendations in reference to what I mentioned. Preferably by those who have owned this type of bird. I don't care if you had a parrot, parakeet or any other kind of bird. Before I got the bird,I asked question on finches and got a whole bunch of responses about everything EXCEPT how to take care of a finch. And please save your "you should have gotten information before you bought the bird' b.s. because it wont help or make a difference. Info on FINCHES or birds compatible with them is all I need. Thanks a lot.  more

Resolved Question: i want to get a pretty big fish tank. i don't know anything about fish! can anyone answer a few Q's for me?

i'm not getting it quite yet because i don't have the money right now, but it's gonna be something i do soon. i was in the store the other day, and i like parrot fish... pretty much ones that are colorful or shaped different. i don't just want goldfish. i know the people in the store would be able to help me, but i worked in sales before and i know how frustrating it is to work with someone and have them not buy... so i thought i'd do a little research online first. how do you know what fish need salt water and which ones need plain? is there some kind of filter that does most of the cleaning for you?? which fish are compatible with each other? (ie - what kind of fish can go with parrot fish?) any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks. these are the kind of parrot fish i'm talking about. http://www.iran-daily.com/1384/2306/html/025434.jpg any suggestions on other types of fish that i could get would be awesome. : )  more

Resolved Question: a guy and a parrot.............?

A guy walks into a store for some last-minute Christmas shopping, and sees a parrot for sale. He asks the clerk what the parrot's name is and the clerk tells him it's Chet. He also tells the man that this is one amazing parrot. If you put a match under his left foot, it sings “Jingle Bells,” and if you put a match under its left foot, it sings “Deck the Halls.” The man thinks that is the coolest thing he's ever seen, so he decides to buy it for his wife. So he gets home, and puts it away. Then he wonders what will happen if he puts it a match between its legs, so he tries it, and the parrot starts singing “Chet's nuts roasting over an open fire...”  more

Resolved Question: What are some trustworthy websites with fertile parrot eggs for sale?

I'm looking into buying a fertile parrot egg. (An egg or at least young bird so it will have no problem getting used to my family.) The parrots I'm most interested in are African Blue Macaws and African Grey Parrots. Buying from somebody in KS would make things easier. Does anyone know of truly safe sites with eggs/babies for sale? What's the usual cost? YES I've thought everything through. My boyfriend, his 15 yr old brother and I live together. I'm a homemaker; that means each and everyday I'll have all the time in the world for he/she. We've got the money for it. We've got more than enough love and time for it. Yea I've thought it through. I just want the best for the bird since it would become a part of my family. And yes there is such a thing as an African Blue & Gold Macaw.  more

Resolved Question: Large parrot in pet store...?

I go to a pet store in my lunch break and behind the counter through a wall aquarium you can see a large parrot and hear him as well. The room back there is where they groom dogs. Every time I go in I see him hanging from his beak in his cage. Today I finally got enough nerve to ask him if he ever comes out... of course they said yes, but I get the feeling he spends more time in than out. They also have a cockatiel there that has been there for over a year, unfortunately they couldn't tell me the sex, but I could clearly see it was a male. Neither one of these birds are for sale and I have to say they both look in good condition, but wonder if they really get the attention they need, especially because they never leave the store and 2 days a week they are closed. Here's the thing, I went to a beautiful sanctuary for rescued birds over the weekend, here's the link: http://www.papegaai.org/index.php?taal=engels&paginanr=1 And would love to suggest they give up the parrot to live in this safe haven for birds. The birds will never be relocated and will live out the rest of it's life there just being a bird. The place is filled with cockatoo's and parrots and it's a wonderful organization that will happily take in all birds. How can I best suggest this without offending them? Or should I just keep my big beak out of it! pardon the pun :-) It just breaks my heart for these larger birds that need room and attention to see them stuck in a pet store.  more

Resolved Question: How can I approach some irritating neighbors?

I have a family living next door, with two children, a 14-year old boy and a 12-year old girl. They are a nice family, very kind to us, yet they can be very irritating. The father and the boy like to set off extra sparklers and popping light- up things that aren't' fireworks, but they are very noisy from the 4th of July (there seems to be endless amounts of these) on random weeknights, when my children are trying to sleep to wake up early the next morning. The girl keeps trying to persuade my family to purchase gift wrap from her sale at school. Once or twice a day she will come over and beg for some purchases. Two other neighbors who got to my home first were the ones I purchase from, I'm not ready to buy more wrapping paper, yet she still does not seem to get the fact that I'm not interested in purchasing something. The boy is also nearly always coming over to "chill out" with my own 13-year old boy, always after school, and I always have to decline since my boy has lots of homework. I wonder if this neighbor boy ever gets any schoolwork done. The mother is always wanting to sit down and discuss life, on the phone or out for lunch. She could talk for hours... she doesn't understand that I have three children involved in many activities and I usually don't have time to just casually chat. Now, have I mentioned their parrot? They always have their screen door closed, but not their main back door. I can always hear their loud parrot sqwacking, and my hudband and I have agreed it's too much. It's been irritating us for a while now. I want to lay down that law, but I'm always afraid of hurting people's feelings. How can I explain that weeknight sparklers, begging gift-wrap selling 12 year olds, a talkative mother, annoying 14-year old, and a sqwacking parrot are too much for us to handle? All answers appreciated.  more

Resolved Question: Probiotics for parrots?

My cockatiel just finished up a harsh antibacterial treatment. I'm looking for a safe probiotic I can administer so her gut flora can recover faster. I found a children's probiotic on sale at the grocery store called CULTURELLE, so I thought that if it's safe for kids then it's probably safe for my bird. It says it contains both pro- and pre-biotics. It contains a strain called Lactobacillus GG. I started looking it up on wiki and it said this helps make lactic acid. Birds don't have lactic acid, that's why they can't digest milk products. So is this safe for a bird? Are there any probiotic strains that I can use on a bird? Does anyone know of a common healthy gut flora that most birds have? Thanks for the help! Please feel free to explain all the details of this confusing subject!  more
